NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Lee from Huronlea Resident turns Attend the candidates’ meeting for Brussels on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the arena. Take your questions and concerns to the meeting and see who has the answers for Huron East. Enjoy the nice fall days. Bye now, Betty G. W. Installed The Huronlea Auxiliary hosted the Region 3 Auxiliary annual meeting. The new executive was installed by the Ontario President, Mary Scott of Stratford, left. Right from her are Donna Klopp of Zurich, president; Audrey Cardiff, Brussels, vice-president; Jim Armstrong, Brussels, secretary. 102 Great Aunt Letitia kept talking about Mrs. Doctor Merrick which amused and annoyed me. I was 15 years old and thought I was wiser than anyone. “Why,” I asked, ‘‘do you say Mrs. Doctor” you don't say Mrs. Lawyer or even Mrs. Reverend?” “It is a term of respect,” replied my aunt, “which someday you will understand. This discussion is over.” Well, it’s nearly 70 years later and I do understand because I have had the great pleasure of meeting Mrs. Doctor Stephens. Glenna will be 102 on Oct. 22 of this month. She is tall, slim and regal looking: her white hair always looks freshly coiffured, her wardrobe is extensive and she has - well the only word is “style”. Aunt Letitia would probably say “she is to the manor born”. One day Glenna approached me outside the dining room looking worried “Do you think it would be all right to go to lunch without a hat'?” “It will be quite acceptable,” I assured her. “Today they’re not even wearing gloves.” Glenna was still fretful, “I forgot my purse.” told her it had all been taken care of and she smiled her beautiful smile and said “they’re so thoughtful”. I always think of Glenna in a long crimson velvet outfit to which she has added two or three - on a cold day four - shawls and stoles. I say, “good morning” and she nods and replies “it seems very pleasant; 1 may go out later.” The greetings having been exchanged we sit down to breakfast - minus hat or gloves, which she does not need. She is Mrs. Doctor Stephens! Lodge installs officers Installation ceremonies were held on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels. District Deputy President Elva Brown of Huron District #23, assist ed by a degree team from Perth District #29 Stratford, installed the elected, officers: Noble Grand, Lillian Moses; Vice Grand, Joyce Jacklin; secretary, Rene Richmond; financial secretary, Lois McCall; treasurer, Lois McCall. All other appointed officers for the term 2000-2001 were installed into their chairs. An enjoyable social time with lunch and several draws took place following the meeting. Huronlea Auxiliary hosts District Three meeting The Huronlea Nursing Hdme Auxiliary was proud to host the District Three Auxiliary meeting on Sept. 27 with over 50 people in attendance. President Donna Klopp opened the meeting. Greetings were made by Audrey Cardiff, Mary Scott and Norma Rudy. Cathrine Campbell did the invocation. Leona Armstrong introduced the guest speaker, Michele Hanson from the women’s shelter in Huron. Mrs. Hanson’s motto is “Stop Abuse Now”. There are a number of reasons why women leave their homes or community for safety and stay at the shelter, she said. If you know of someone who needs help, listen to what they are saying. Help by giving the phone number of a shelter in the county, which may connect people to shelters that may be closer to where they live. The Huron County Women’s Shelter has seven bedrooms which can accommodate a few families at one time. During their stay they can get counselling to help them get on track. Food is provided through the government and community dona tions. When families are ready to leave, they are supplied with a food basket and clothing if needed. Joan Golden thanked her for help ing to enlighten the public on the shelter program. The Seaforth Harmony Kings entertained the group with songs of the past. Lunch was supplied by the Huronlea Auxiliary. Mary Scott read the minutes of the last District meeting, which was held at the Ritz Lutheran Villa in Mitchell. She gave the treasurer’s report and correspondence. Roll call was answered on how each auxiliary tries to improve the quality of life for the residents, whether it was visiting residents, craft sales, a cart selling tuck shop items, celebrating birthdays, Mother’s Day tea, strawberry socials and providing entertainment. Jim Armstrong conducted the elec tion of officers for the year 2000 - 2001. President is Donna Klopp; first vice president, Audrey Cardiff and secretary, Jim Armstrong. The Huronlea Auxiliary draw was made with the winners being: quilt, Ralph Treibner; Tupperware gift package, Mary Lowe; cookbook, Glenna Stephens. A 50/25/25 draw was done to help raise money, along with a number of draws on other items. The date for next year’s District Three meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001.
