McDonalds greet for Duff’s service Jim and Linda McDonald were greeters at Duff’s United Church on Oct. 8. Having a little trouble with the furnace working, the service was held downstairs where it was much wanner on this Thanksgiving Day. After the opening hymn For the Beauty of the Earth Joan Golden made the announcements. On Oct. 15, baptism will take place, plus that Sunday will find the congregation looking at the Canadian Food Grains Bank - A Christian Response to Hunger. Anyone interested in helping with looking after the small children of the congregation can call Joan. Wednesday, Oct. 11 begins the book study of Gary Zukav’s book, Soul Stories. The study begins at the church at 8 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend. The UCW mystery tour happens Oct. 21. The car pool leaves the church at 3:30 p.m. and will be com ing back at 9 p.m. If you are interest ed in attending call Gloria Wilbee or Judy Emmrich. Duff’s Anniversary service will be Oct. 22 at ll a.m. There will be lunch following the service. Everyone is welcome to help cele brate this special day. There will be very special music and a lot of well known readers. After the choir sang, Praise God for the Harvest, Joan invited the children forward to tell them about communion and how in this church everyone is invited to share in the breaking of the bread and drinking of the wine (juice). She told them that it didn't matter the age or the denomination of the person. The older class of the Sunday School, led by Lisa Love, shared their rap song about Thanksgiving and Joan delivered her Thanksgiving message. All the food that was col lected that morning is going to the food bank. B.J. and Thys DeJong attended an enjoyable weekend retreat this past Saturday and Sunday at the Hermosa Baptist camp facility on Lake Huron. The event was put on by the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. The theme was Joy of the Lord. B.J. said that the weather was cold and damp but the fellowship was warm and great. Sunday after a morning worship service with speaker Paul Wagner, giving his message of A Blessing to All, the gro”p enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving meal together. PEOPLE AROUND WALTON I attended the Brussels 4-H Sheep and Beef Auction this past Saturday and I learned a lot about what goes on there. The members bring their 4-H ani mals to get judged once again (after already having been judged at differ ent fairs) around 10 a.m. Depending on how they placed in the judging determines how they will line up to enter the sale ring. I also learned that the buyers of the animals are very generous people. I always thought that they buy these animals for themselves to take home to butcher. And sometimes that hap pens, but in most cases these people will pay high prices for these ani mals and then will resell them at the next regular sale, sometimes losing money. So what it means is that they have donated a lot of money to each 4-H kid. It is so great to see such support for these kids and 4-H in general. I know that my son Geoff was very pleased to have sold his lamb Harold, for $2.90 a pound. Tim Prior of Brussels Agri Service, was the buyer of the lamb. Another part of the sale that I thought was great was that after the auction, each buyer had their picture taken with the owner of the animal that they bought and the animal itself. For those 4-H kids that sold their project lambs and calves it was both a happy but sad day as they said goodbye to their animals, which in a lot of cases, became quite a pet. I remember well my days in 4-H, when I cried over every calf that I sold. I said goodbye over the years to Shorty, Ralph, Boliver and Claud (Grand Champion). It didn’t help matters much when the man that did the butchering lived only a few miles away. So many times I wanted to go down and set all the animals free. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend.
