Erom the sidelines For MAYOR of the New Municipality of Morris-Tumberry VOTE LYNN HOY Questions & Concerns? Call 357-3435 “Your support will be appreciated” Election day is November 13, 2000 Only time will tell with the Jays By Hugh Nichol If losing eight of their final 10 games wasn’t em-barrassing enough, the Toronto Blue Jays administra tive problems may have only begun. Their first order of business sur rounds the playing status of two of their marquee players in Alex Gonzalez and Carlos Delgado. Gonzalez is a free agent and re-sign ing him will cost in the area of $6 million a year while Delgado’s con tract contains a clause giving him the right to request a trade within 15 days following the completion of the World Series. Gonzalez almost cer tainly will not negotiate until after this year’s premium free agent, Seattle short stop Alex Rodriguez, sets the standard and Delgado will almost certainly not waive his option unless his exciting three year $34 million contact is rewrote. Financially the Jays may not be able to afford both players but mar keting wise, can they afford not to? The second major decision involves how to improve the Jays on-field performance. Defensively only Baltimore, Kansas City and Texas had a worse team ERA as this season’s play ranged from laughable to pathetic. The result was an atten dance decrease of almost 350,000 from the previous year and with an expected increase of $20 million in payroll the Jays must find new ways to attract the paying customer. The third and final decision involves the management team of Gord Ash and manager Jim Fregosi. Fregosi’s biggest problem is that he is a National League manager in charge of an American League team. The Jays do not have the ability to manufacture runs without depending on the long ball. They seldom hit and run and attempted to steal only 123 times. By comparison Florida Marlin’s Luis Castillo made 84 attempts on his own while 42 year old Rickey Henderson swiped 31 bases, nine more than the Jays leader Raul Mondesi. Fregosi was not without loyalty to his players. He installed Jose Cruz in centrefield, Tony Batista at third base and Shannon Stewart in the lead-off position on an every day basis and all three responded with career seasons as did several others. However, a new broom sweeps clean and the Rogers Communications own erships will almost certainly look in a different direction. The Jays decline has been directly linked to the 1995 sale of Labatt to the Belgium-based Interbrew SA, a faceless conglomerate whose only interest in the club was financial. Ted Rogers lives in Toronto and is an identifiable owner who will, on a daily basis, be in contact with the baseball public. His vision is to cre ate a sports empire with the ability to compete against Time Warner (Atlanta Braves), Fax TV (Los Angeles Dodgers), and Disney (Anaheim Angels), a vision that hinges on the success of the Toronto Blue Jays. Only time will tell if the pursuit of this dream will be good for the ball club or whether Rogers becomes Canada’s answer to George Steinbrenner, another administrative problem the Jays do not need.
