THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2000.Sports Local boys suit up with Wingham Ironmen By Janice Becker Citizen staff By the time they were five, Derek Cook and Matt Anderson had become accustomed to having their skates laced and taking to the ice at the Blyth and District Community Centre. This year, both 17-year-olds have advanced to Junior C hockey, play ing for the Wingham Ironmen. The two have a fairly similar hock ey history, starting as tots, working their way through the system then earning All-Ontario championships for the 1997-98 and 1999-2000 sea sons as Bantams and Midgets. In 1998-99, their Blyth team made it to the finals. The young men have also been playing hockey for Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton for three years. When asked about their hopes of having an opportunity to play at the Junior C level, Anderson said he sus pected Wingham might call as his brother had played for the Ironmen last year. Anderson and Cook each received letters of invitation in early August for the try-outs. Work began by mid month. Both were interested in carrying their hockey careers beyond Blyth. Anderson says he is glad he has somewhere to play “that would be pretty good.” “I just wanted somewhere to play,” says Cook. The young team has already played four regular season games. Cook says he' has definitely noticed a difference in play this year. “There is a lot more hitting.” “It is a lot faster and the players are more evenly skilled,” adds Anderson. As for personal goals for this sea son. Cook just laughs at Anderson saying he needs to keep that goal-a- game going. Anderson had scored in each of the first three games for the Ironmen. While neither young man foresees a long-term career in hockey, both hope to continue playing for the Ironmen for several years to come.
