Entertainment^ Leisure Theatre review Delightful moments but pace slows ‘Ernest’ Jolly laugh Donal Carrier as Jack, left and Graham Abbey as Algernon, discuss the trivialities of their leisurely life during the Avon theatre’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest. By Janice Becker Citizen staff It was one of those plays which had absolutely delightful moments, but they seemed too slow in coming. The Avon Theatre’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest, starred Graham Abbey as Algernon and Donald Carrier as Jack, two young men of leisure who pride themselves on being able to Auxiliary hosts night with Elvis weasel their way out of uncomfortable responsibilities by using false names. While the first act was necessary as it explained the double lives both men led and their preference for pleasures, it seemed to drag. A contradiction however, was that the two lead characters seemed to race through their lines, belying the fact that ihey were men of considerable comfort and wealth with really nothing better to do with their time. In spite of the slow first act, the remainder of the play was filled with chuckles as the deceptions of both men are discovered. Their prospective fiancees believe they are to wed the same man as the men have each used the same false monicker. They are soon to discover how that assumed name may have gotten them into a fix and also raised the question of their ladies’ true affections. The hilarity peaks with the performance of Abbey as he interacts with his young betrothed Claire Jullien as Cecily. Having asked for her hand after a mere two hours of acquaintance, he is befuddled and quizzical- as he listens to Cecily rave about her imagined love affair with a man she had never met. She is angry at Algernon, who is pretending to be that man, for having broken up with her though only in her imagination. He falls into her daydream ramblings, asking whether he had apologized properly, though the pair had never met Jullien is excellent as young Cecily, a naive girl secluded in a country manor, having only her dreams and a governess, to keep her entertained. Her facial expressions as she displayed her disgust at a particular name brought roars from the obviously-enthralled audience. Though it is a shame to see an actress such as Patricia Collins in limited roles such as Lady Brancaster (or Mme. Pernelle in Tartuffe), where she portrays the older, angry, uptight, stem, aunt or mother, she fills the role exceptionally well.7 She strikes fear into the junior family members, demanding respect from them. She gets that from the audience. Though the three-hour production seemed lengthy, the misadventures of the third and fourth acts were worth the wait. The Importance of Being Ernest runs at the Avon Theatre through Nov. 4. _ ~ Welcome lo Commencement Exercises at Central Huron Secondary School Friday, October 6th at 8:00 pm An invitation is extended to all graduates, parents and friends.
