Entertainment Leisure Teeswater dance troupe runners-up at Western ■ ♦ v ♦ ♦ * .♦ If you hear some loud foot-stomp ing and toe-tapping your way, it just might be the Class Taps, the area’s very own Junior River dance. This group of 19 young ladies and two young gentlemen are all from the Wingham, Teeswater, Formosa and Brussels area and are all students of Jan’s Danceshop, Teeswater. Laura Jarvis, who also teaches at the Danceshop and Heidi Whytock (both former pupils) took up the challenge this summer to teach and choreo graph this group of 21 dancers. These youngsters all have been taking stepdancing for at least four years and were ready for a new chal lenge. At the Branch After smaller classes at the danceshop in May, the large group was put together and practices had to be moved to the Belmore Community Centre to allow for more floor space for 21 pairs of legs to spread out and form a chorus-like kick-line, as well as a large pinwheel formation. The timing and choreog raphy of their moves is something to see and after endless hours of prac tising and aching feet, it was finally perfected. The group competed at the Junior Youth Talent Search Teeswater Competition on Aug. 27 and was chosen along with four other acts, to compete at the semi-final competi- tion at the new PL Stage at the Western Fair, London last Sunday, Sept. 10. This is an all Ontario com petition with 75 acts competing, cho sen from the many preliminary con tests throughout the province. At this competition. Class Taps was again selected in the top 15 and went on to compete in the finals at Western Fair last Satu/day, Sept. 16. Getting to the finals was a great experience for all of the people involved and not a prouder moment could have happened for all of them when Class Taps was chosen first runner-up of the Junior Youth Talent Search, Ontario Competition. Seniors enjoy afternoon at Legion Tapping their heals It was a wonderful performance by the Teeswater Class Taps as they amazed the audience at the Brussels Fair variety show. The troupe recently were runners-up in the Western Fair Youth Talent Search Schneider Haus hosts pie contest On Saturday, Sept. 30 the Schneider Haus is holding an Apple Pie Baking Contest as part of the annual Schnitzing Bee weekend. Everyone has their own favourite apple pie recipe - it might include a particular variety of apple, or the addition of another fruit such as blueberries, or maybe the secret is in the crust. The rules and regulations for this contest are few: the pie must be homemade, it must have a pastry crust, and it must contain apples. There is a category for youth (ages eight to 14) and an adult category (ages 15 and older). Pre-registration is not required but all pies must be at the Joseph Schneider Haus by noon on Saturday, Sept. 30. The judging will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the prize, will be awarded at 2 p.m. All participants in the contest will receive free admission to the Schnitzing -Bee. Activities include pressing cider, cooking apple butter on an outdoor fire, tasting heritage varieties of apples, and, of course, chopping and drying apples in the Schnitzhaus. By JoAnn McDonald It’s been a wonderful week at the Branch. We have seen a lot of friends and comrades who have had a busy summer and are now drop ping back into the branch. It was a great afternoon on Thursday. A nice group of seniors attended and we were thrilled to have some residents of Huronlea come to enjoy the afternoon. The guest speaker, Kevin Hummel of Crime Stoppers, gave a short report on the work of Crime Stoppers and how sometimes it can be the smallest of tips that leads to apprehending the culprits. Keep your eyes open and take notes if you see something odd. Following Kevin, was the musical talents of the group of The Saints. They played and sang lots of old- time music and had people singing along and tapping their toes. Lunch was served throughout the afternoon and a good time was enjoyed by all. This Friday night supper is sausage stew/casserole. You don’t have to be a Legion member to attend. It’s open to anyone. Saturday was the elimination draw and there are some happy people around Brussels. Happiest will be Ken and Bessie Johnston, big win ners of $ 1,500. Now Ken remember, you didn’t want to buy a ticket from me, but aren’t you glad Bessie did? Congratulations. The entertainment that was enjoyed by those attending was fan tastic. The musical talent of Leanne Minielly started the show. There were special appearances by Stompin Tom Connors, Garth Brooks, Rita McNeil, Holly Dunn, Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton. Surprise guests included the talented Anthony Vader singing The Lions Sleeps Tonight and Sonny and Cher singing / Got You Babe. The evening then really started to rock when Elvis appeared. The crowd went wild and a great show was enjoyed. We hope all who were there enjoyed the talents of our visit ing music stars. The fish fry was also a success and our marvellous Legion cooks were hard at work. Remember we can always use extra hands so be a volunteer when you drop in at the branch.
