THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 2000 Ontario lucks oft* fall seatbelt campaign The fall 2000 Seatbelt Campaign will kick off on Sept. 30 this year with the 6th annual seatbelt chal lenge taking place in Ontario. Most of us take seatbelt use for granted, but every day, about a mil lion people in this province get behind the wheel and do not buckle up. Many do not restrain their chil dren properly,” said Sr. Const. Don Shropshall. “Police officers have heard excuses like T was just going to the store’, 'My child doesn’t like his/her car seat’, 'It wrinkles my clothes’, 'I could be trapped’ and 'I forgot’. Still seatbelt use remains the single most cost effective way for motor vehicle occupants to reduce their chance of injury or death in a motor vehicle collision. ‘We know that the people who don’t buckle up tend to be young, male, more likely to drive an older vehicle, often a pickup truck, and participates in other risk taking behaviour in addition to not using a seatbelt,” said Shropshall. Fatality reports indicate that of the one third of people who were killed in motor vehicle crashes who were not wearing seatbelts, certain charac teristics stood out. A significant number of the fatalities involved sin gle vehicle collisions, many occurred in rural areas, many involved alcohol, most were male. “These are deadly statistics, and we all bear the consequences, the pain and suffering, when friends, family or colleagues are hurt or killed, as well as the extra costs to our health caret, police and rehabili tation support systems. Much of this trauma can be avoided by simply buckling up.” Research has proven that using seatbelts and child safety restraints correctly reduces motor vehicle injuries and fatalities.
