Brussels Legion hosts fall zone eonvention
By JoAnn McDonald
It’s Brussels Fall Fair, it’s Plowing
Match in Elora and yes, it’s Legion
Week across Canada.
Legion Week is a time for all
Legions to act together in raising
awareness of their involvement in
their communities, province, and
indeed Canada.
As you can read in our Nevada
report, published separately, the
Branch contributes to a variety of
local and regional and national
groups. Most of our donations stay
within our local area and benefit the
local children. It has always been the
commitment of the Royal Canadian
Legion to work to aid the
community and to hopefully enrich
the quality of life for the community.
To do this, we offer many different
activities at the Branch and invite
people to join us.
Saturday afternoon saw a
wonderful crowd of enthusiastic
euchre players. There were 11 tables
at play with some new faces
commenting on what a great day it
was and great lunch provided.
Avon Canada
prepares to
make history
On Saturday, Sept. 23, Avon
Canada’s 65,000 sales dealers will
be calling on Canadian's from coast
to coast to contribute to the largest
fundraising effort in the company’s
history.
In keeping with the seven-year
tradition of Avon’s Flame Crusade
Against Breast Cancer, the Million
Dollar Day will raise funds for
breast cancer research. This time,
though, it will be a fundraiser with a
twist - a nationwide attempt to raise
$1 million in a single day.
Avon sales dealers will be ringing
doorbells, setting up in local
shopping malls and, in the run-up to
the Million Dollar Day, knocking on
the doors of major corporations.
They will be selling the Avon Pink
Ribbon Candle for $5, all taxes
included
As in previous years, sales dealers
make no earnings on sales. All
profits go to breast cancer research,
education, treatment, prevention
and awareness.
Avon Canada will invite high-
profile Canadians to help light the
way to this historic event in a series
of symbolic candle-lighting
ceremonies to be held in Halifax,
Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Since 1993, Avon Canada has
raised more than $5 million for
breast cancer research. The funds
raised are managed by the Avon
Flame Foundation, the largest
corporate contributor to the
Canadian Breast Cancer Research
Initiative, supporting more than 115
research projects led by Canada’s
top cancer scientists.

Surfing the internet resulted in Tammy-Lynn Naylor of
Brussels becoming a published poetry author.
Brusselite’s poem in print

Citizen staff
Observing the polluted earth,
Tammy-Lynn Naylor of Brussels
puts her thoughts and feelings into
poetry, reminding everyone to
consider the impacts.
When she wrote Our Earth some
time ago, she never imagined it
would one day be published both on
the web and in a book of poems
entitles Measures from the Heart.
While cruising the web, Naylor
came across poetry.com, a site
which takes submissions then
publishes a selection of the best.
Naylor says hers was among
thousands entered in the contest.
A stickler for concerns about
recycling and waste, Naylor hopes

up and around the lot so the residents
had a chance to hear the pipe band,
see the colourful flags of the

proceeded down the highway to the

remembrance of our fallen comrades
and the observance of the two
minutes of silence then followed.

everyone has a responsibility to look
after the earth.
Writing poetry is a pastime which
Naylor says she has undertaken for
years, a hobby which allows her to
express her heartfelt thoughts about
social issues.
Though she has not yet received
the hard copy of Measures from the
Heart, Naylor says her poems and
others submitted can be found at
