A Young Perspective__ Knowing the signs may prevent teen suicide Compiled by Sarah Mann ____I'm sleeping much later than I used to. ____ I'm not sleeping well and wake up early in the morning. ____I'm taking a lot of naps. ____ My appetite has changed, and I've noticeably lost or gained weight. ____I feel restless. Sarah's side ____ I have withdrawn from friends and family. ____I can't concentrate very well. ____I’ve lost interest or pleasure in activities that I once enjoyed. ____I feel hopeless or guilty. ____ I’ve had sudden mood or behaviour changes. ____I feel that life isn't worth liv ing. If several of the statements listed above describe you or a friend, you may be suicidal and it is advised that you or your friend talk to a mental health professional such as a social worker or other trusted adult such as a parent or school counsellor about how you feel. Listen for hints like “I’d be better ott dead’’ or “I won’t be a problem for you much longer’’ or “Nothing matters; it’s no use.” Teenagers who are planning to commit suicide might “clean house” by giving away favourite posses sions, cleaning their rooms or throw ing things away. One of the most dangerous times of a teen’s life is when he or she has suffered a loss or humiliation of some kind: loss of self-esteem, the breakup with a boyfriend or girl friend or the trauma of a parents’ divorce. If you are feeling suicidal or just need someone to talk to call the kids help phone at l-800-668-6868. And remember — sdicide is a per manent solution to a temporary problem. s an By Sarah Mann I attend F.E. Madill Secondary School and at the back-to-school assembly we were informed that we might be getting a surveillance cam era to try and prevent the fire alarm from being pulled. They said that What matters issue of students7 right, right? when a decision had been made, the students would be informed. Now that’s just fine and dandy but now we do have a video camera at school and the only way people found out about it was through word of mouth. I think that we should have been informed that there was definitely going to be a camera put up - we as the students have a right to know that we are being taped, don’t we? I talked to an authority figure at the school regarding whether or not the students would be informed and he replied that it was up to someone else and assumed that everyone already knew. I talked with Mr. Tessier, the prin cipal, and he told me that there would be a formal announcement made and he thanked me for remind ing him. I wonder what would have hap pened if I didn’t remind him. Help shouldn’t stop at home Born on this day... Few gave this word a second thought until its horrific breakout in Walkerton. Water companies from all over the world are generous enough to send free water bottles and jugs to the people of Walkerton who are help less against this bacteria. It was so kind of them to help out. I mean as soon as they heard about Walkerton’s problem I’m sure the water companies weren’t in for free publicity for their water. They just wanted to help their fellow man out in a time of need, right? Well, has anyone ever thought about helping out the people over in the Third World countries? I know that companies send over water and food. World Visions helps the chil dren, but why don’t we make such a big deal about the diseases and hor rible living conditions those people live with . Their children are dying from mal- nufrion every day and yet it isn't on the news every night. Their houses are usually nothing more than room shacks. Why aren't water companies food companies jumping at chance to save these people? Is it because we are so used to the Third World countries being poor that it seems impossible to stop the starvation and malnution? If it is then this is a sad world we one and the live in. I know Walkerton needed this water, but why should the other countries be ignored? Don’t they deserve help too? Madill Secondary School were introduced to a program called TAP (Teacher Advisory Program). It involved letting the students set their Jong range goal and find out their strengths and weaknesses. This year all the students from Grade 9 to OACs are required to par ticipate in TAP. It is done during school time and will be a total of 30 minutes long. So how do the students benefit from this TAP? Mr. Wayne Tessier the principal of Madill explains, “It is a way of providing assistance to the students in their setting of long range goals both educational and for their careers. It is also there to pro vide them with skills for success for their school program.” TAP began on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and will continue every Tuesday after that for the rest of the school year. “Don’t be played like someone else’s board game.” - Greg Gaffin Give Someone a Second Chance.
