Grade 3
Everyone is happy to be back to
school to see their friends and
teachers. Mrs. Hall was interviewing
the parents and children who are in
junior kindergarten this year. The
senior kindergarten students came
tor their first days on Thursday and
Friday.
Grade Is are enjoying coming
to school every day this year.
They have been colouring,
painting, making up stories and
reading. They have been trying to
read better.
The Grade 2s have been working
on their journals. They have been
playing a game called Nameo, which
is like Bingo. They have also been
talking about time and special
things.
The Grade 3/4 class has been
enjoying having a split class this
year. The Grade 4s have liked
making their initials into pictures.
PUC sale nears completion
Though the papers have not yet
been signed, Brussels Clerk-
Treasurer Donna White told council,
Sept. 5, that she expects to hear soon
that the purchase of Brussels PUC
by Stratford Hydro has. been
completed.

The Grade 4/5 class way down at

lot of handwriting and really like
music, because it is fun.
The Grade 5/6 class has already
done some presentations on
“themselves” in French. They will
also be beginning a unit on the
Olympics. They have been given an
assignment to write newspapers
about themselves.
Grade 7s went to Tech 21 with
Grade 8 on the second day of school.
They are working on myths and are
getting ready for intramural soccer.
The Grade 8s have finished an art
project where they had to make a

too have been writing in their
journals.

The matter of just where Brussels
household waste will go as of
January, 2000 may soon be settled.
With Morris Twp. council
requesting a response with regards to
use of their site and investigations
into both the Mid-Huron and Exeter
landfill sites, Brussels Clerk-
Treasurer Donna White told council
at the September session that things
look very positive for an Exeter
solution.
Mid-Huron had responded to a
letter of request. but site
management would not consider
taking Brussels waste and the Morris
price per tonne was considerably
higher than expected.
Brussels council said the Exeter
quote was $60 per tonne. Use of the
Morris site had a higher tonnage cost
and a guarantee of 550 tonnes. In
1999, Brussels produced just 430
tonnes of curbside waste.
Even with the cost of trucking to
Council approves grant application
Brussels councillors were
informed at the Sept. 5 meeting that
the application for the new sludge
storage tank had been received by
the Ministry of Environment and
Energy.
The application included a change
to incorporate an aerator on the tank
to address any odour problem.***
Lavis Contracting is to begin
working on James Street in the near
future.***
Old sidewalks which are
scheduled ' for repair are to be
removed in late September or early
October.***
With the final levy of residential
taxes due Sept. 1, it was hoped the
commercial tax dates would be Oct.
1 and Dec. 1.***
Reeve Ralph Watson will attend a
meeting with Morris Twp. council
Sept 19 to discuss fire issues.***
A grant application will be
submitted for a generator for the
BMG arena.
While the proposed generator
would cost almost $19,000, the total
price would rise over $20,000 with
installation. The project would then
qualify for a $10,000 grant. White
told council.***
Village employees are continuing
to work towards meeting all new
standards set for water quality
testing, said White.
A purification system is being
investigated for the backup well,
more frequent testing is being done,
and quarterly reports will be
prepared.***

Exeter, White estimated savings of
$10,000.
The one concern with an
agreement with the Exeter site was
for Saturday drop-offs by residents
for materials too large for pick-up.
White said she has talked with
both Wingham and Grey about the
use of those sites for large items.
No agreement has yet been
worked out, but Saturday use of the
Morns site will remain in effect until
Dec. 31.
Discussions are also ongoing with
regards to service providers as all
other municipalities which will
become Huron East use the
Bluewater service for recycleables.
Based on current figures, White
said it would be cheaper to use
Bluewater for regular garbage as
there would be an increased trucking
cost for Carters to truck to Exeter,
but Bluewater’s recycling costs are
higher.
Council approved a shared
appointment agreement for the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority board.***
Accounts payable in the amount of
$19,206.42 were approved for
payment.***
White was authorized to take
courses in human relations at
Conestogo College with the village
to reimburse the costs after
successful completion.***
A resolution to declare all
remaining lots in the industrial park
as surplus and posted for sale, was
passed.

It would cost approximately

Because the Bluewater prices are
based on shipping to Exeter, council
agreed to ensure all landfill
arrangements were secure before
