The Citizen, 2000-09-13, Page 21PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2000. Duffs minister speaks of sitting on the sidelines Marilyn McDonald and granddaughter Sarah, greeted worshippers at Duff’s United Church on Sept. 10. Joan Tuchlinsky welcomed everyone to the service and invited everyone to sing the Introit. During announcements Joan told about her Coventing Service in Bluevale at 7:30 p.m. She reminded people that next Sunday, Sept. 17, Bluevale will be having its anniversary service so there will be no church at Duff’s. Anyone wanting to have their baby baptized, the date will be Sept. 24. If interested give Joan a call. After the Prayer of Approach Brian Black sang Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. Joan then called the young worshippers forward and asked them if they have ever played musical chairs. They all had played it and they had also had a taste of losing and sitting on the sidelines as the game continued without them. Joan told them of a different way to play it where no one was ever kicked out. This time when the music s'opped no one is out; they just have to double up on a chair. Each time a chair is removed and neaf m£ end everyone is sitting on one chair. She says it feels better to be involved than left out and that Jesus calls us to involve everyone in games and in FROM WALTON life. Her sermon was Jesus- Teacher/Learner was based on the story in Mark about a Phoenician woman, a Gentile who wanted Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus expressed his refusal to agree to her request in a disdainful metaphor, which compares her and her daughter to little dogs who are not to be fed the children’s bread. With this rebuff, Jesus is affirming the priority of the Jews in Jesus’ mission. The woman’s response allows that priority to stand but persistently asks for attention to Gentiles also. This story, Joan said, shows Jesus us a typical Jewish man who was challenged by the woman to think in a new way. Matching his own rhetorical skills, she turns the saying back on Jesus who then heals her daughter because of what she said. The teacher, Jesus, is open to learning from others, even those who are usually dismissed as unimportant or unworthy. In this story, the woman is challenging the entire religious structure that the Jewish people worked within, using her wit and courage. Jesus saw this as a new way of living out his ministry. Jesus’ ability to recognize the need for inclusion of all people was not ingrained and part of who he was as a Jewish male growing up in a society with exclusive rules and laws to follow. But he learned that including others is a part of God’s vision for creation. “If Jesus can humbly learn from a non-Jewish woman in the first century, who of us todaj cannot also Avon SCHOO^ Maitland Learning for a Lifetime What does a school trustee do? UCW welcomes J. Tuchlinsky Heidi McClure opened the UCW meeting with prayer on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Gloria Wilbee.then read the scripture story about the woman that was healed by touching Jesus’ robe, then sang He Touched Me. Melva Fraser did a reading then Gloria got everyone’s toes a-tapping by singing Put a Little Love in Your Heart. Melva closed the worship part of the service with prayer and Gloria introduced Joan Tuchlinksy as guest speaker. Joan’s topic was about therapeutic touch. She explained that therapeutic touch is a universal human act whereby one person may help another to enjoy improved health. It is a conscious act of therapeutic intervention, an intelligent direction of life forces wherein one uses the hand to help and to heal. It provides another avenue of wellness. Each person has an energy field, she said, which surrounds the physical body. This energy field reflects the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual condition. It is made up of the same energy which supports all living matter, and since man is an open system (that is, he affects and is affected by things and conditions outside of himself), the energy field fluctuates in size and intensity, constantly flowing about the body of any living thing - people, plants and animals.
