Sports Blyth Squirts wrap up remarkable season After a winning year, the Blyth Squirt Boys season has ended with the loss of a WOAA semi-final round against Wiarton. In the first game away on Sunday, Sept. 3, Wiarton shut down the visi tors in the top of the inning then scored six on six walks and two hits. Blyth got things closer in the sec ond with four runs. Josh Albrechtas got things started with a single. Next on base was Kyle Nixon with a sin gle, then Justin Ritchie tripled. Kyle Gibson and Trevor Hopf each stroked singles to get on board. Things continued well for Blyth in the bottom half with the first batter flying out to Hopf, then Albrechtas striking out two. The fortune didn’t continue how- ■ ./ L~'.. Oops! Don’t you hate when this happens? A mighty swing was wasted as the batter missed this pitch during the game between the Scorpions and the Frenchmen in Brussels on Sunday. This was a playoff tournament for the town league. (Vicky Bremner photo) ever as Wiarton kept the visitors at six in the third inning, then added to their tally with three more off as many walks and a couple of singles. Blyth’s drought continued in the fourth, though Gibson did reach base on an error. In their half, Wiarton scored two on a pair of singles and a couple of walks. Nixon made a great catch to record the first out, while Albrechtas struck out two. It was donuts in the fifth for Blyth with Cook getting the sole hit. Wiarton managed just one on two walks and a single, while Albrechtas struck out three. The final was 12-4. Down one game in this best of five series, Blyth was looking to turn it around in the next contest. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Despite singles from Cook and Gibson, and a walk issued to Albrechtas the team failed to cash in any runs in the first. In their turn Wiarton jumped to a two-run lead before the inning ended. The first out came on a fly to Nixon at centrefield. Cook struck out one then the team took out a third player on an attempted steal. Blyth was kept off the board in the second with three strikeouts. In the Wiarton half, Cook stepped in for a wounded Blake Miller behind the plate and Albrechtas took the mound giving up two walks and two singles for two runs. It was donuts on both sides through to the sixth inning, until a Wiarton baserunner stole home to score before the inning ended. Blyth finally got on the board in the seventh. Mark McCracken walked, then Dickie Gregg doubled. Two runs came home before the final out. Game three Sept. 4 in Blyth was more of the same. A fired-up Wiarton squad just took over the game belting out several hits to defeat the home boys by a decisive 20-5. The one Blyth highlight came on a major league style catch by Cook as he slid on his pads and stretched to catch a pop-up behind the plate. Blyth Coaches Warren Moore and Steve Cook both expressed pride in how well the team played through out the series. “For these boys this was their first experience of a loss all year,” said Cook. Mdore added, “They had a remarkable year winning inter-town ship and tri-county titles without los ing. They finally felt defeat at the hands of a very talented Wiarton team.” AFP Wealth Management HELEN M.
