LEARNING TRACTORS Whether massive steam engine or child-sized garden tractor, a trip around the grounds of the Thresher Reunion gives students the opportunity to learn about agriculture’s past by talking to the many antique enthusiasts. Students learn history at reunion With a new convener, this year's school pro gram for elementary students at the Huron pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show is sure to offer a different approach to learning about the past. Betty Battye, a well-known educator from Blyth takes over this year with an eye for teaching the students more about what goes on at the reunion. The children will be shown where to go, given questions to get the answers for and be eligible for prizes, she said. She hopes that by encouraging children to ask questions, those running the equipment will give them demonstrations and explain the machinery. “The reunion has a lot to offer as a learning tool for the students,” she said. They can learn about pioneer farming methods and the grad ual change to machinery, from steam through oil, gas and electric. “Through the use of demonstrations, partic ipation in pioneer style activities and suggest ed points of focus, we hope to build an appre ciation ol life in the last century,” said Battye. A brief historical outline of the event and a suggested itinerary for different age groups will be sent to participating schools prior to the reunion. The children will be given a question sheet covering all aspects of the show. Prizes will be awarded to those whose answers are deemed to be the best.
