Organizer encourages visitors to try events

Just jump in and give it a try.
That's the advice of special events chairper
son Wayne Lowe. “We try to get people
involved. There are a lot who like to watch but
not participate. Maybe they're afraid they
won't be able to win, but that's not what it's
about. Just don't be shy."
Lowe, who has been attending the Reunion
for many years is now in his sixth year as spe
cial events chairperson. While he admits to lit
tle experience himself in belt-setting or cross
cutting logs, he can turn a hand at bag tieing.
“I did it as a kid on the farm," he says.
Having enjoyed the show for some time
when he was approached by the former chair
person Dwight Hallahan about organizing the
events, Lowe thought he'd “take a crack” at it.
Though he says for safety reasons some of
the events are adult only, children have joined
in the fun. “They are always keen. I’ve got a
couple who started a few years ago at bag
tieing and I wouldn't be surprisedif they win
it." Nimble fingers are the key, he's decided,
saying that guitar players and banjo pickers
often do quite well at this particular event.
While both bag tieing and log sawing can be
done by most adults, the belt setting competi
tions require a level of experience. “But we do
have some regulars pretty interested in that
and they put on a good show.”
Belt setting is done on tractors one day and
steam engines the next. “It keeps things mov
ing that way."
Lowe says he continues to look for new
ideas as well and will also this year be helping
with the school events.
When he’s not running the special events
each aftemopn, he can be found in the field,
doing demonstrations of disc plowing with a
team of Belgiums owned by himself and Ray
Hallahan. “The Association said they were
looking for a team that was fairly quiet. The
pair we have are like a couple of old sheep, so
now I work back and forth between the two
areas.”
Lowe says anyone interested in giving the
events a try or coming to see the demonstra
tions can find out the times and locations in
the brochure or by listening to the announcer.
There is no pre-registration for the events.
Winners get a souvenir prize.

Team of Belgium horses
demonstrate the old way
A memory from the past was rejuvenated at
the 37th annual Thresher Reunion and Hobby
show in Blyth when horses once again
became part of the show. That tradition con
tinues in the 39th year.
Discontinued several years ago due to safe
ty concerns with horses around the large,
noisy steam engines, the equine will be plow
ing, discing and cultivating during demon
strations Friday at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p. m and
Saturday at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Two or three teams will be harnessed up to
work a small field in the northwest comer of
the arena grounds.
The site is good because it is far from the
engines and with the expansion of the camp
grounds, there is more of a barrier between
the two areas.
The two and a half acre field, next to the
soccer field where the sheep dog demonstra
tions will take place.
It will be an added attraction which will
give visitors an opportunity to see the old
equipment working again.
