Humour attracts customers to his table, the quality of the work keeps them there It’s our End-of-Summer Clearance! PAY NO TAX* Fri., Sat. & Sun., Sept. 8, 9 & 10 By Janice Becker Citizen staff A quick quip and a laugh may draw cus tomers to Leo Sanders’, RR4 Brussels, booth at the craft show of the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Show, but it his wonder ful woodworkings which keep them talking and browsing. An industrial carpenter by trade, Sanders took up cabinetry and fine woodworking after his retirement. Today, he spends much of his time in his basement workshop crafting treasure boxes, wall plaques, coat stands, shelving units, roll top desks or almost any other wooden creation which might be desired. One of the most unique and a stand-out at the show is his huge tree trunk tables. Created from a tree trunk and topped with slices of wood derived from the large bulges which grow in Manitoba maples, Sanders designs tables which would be the centrepiece and subject of conversation in any home. In his eighth year of showing in Blyth, Sanders says he really enjoys going to the show because it is very busy and he has a lot of fun with the patrons. Always ready with a joke, Sanders smiles as he tells of his interactions with the children who wander through the craft show. With a twinkle of mischief in his eye, he relates the story of children asking why there was red colouring in one of his tables, instead of the expected browns or golds.
