Seaforth Reeve Lin Steffler has
announced her intention to run for
mayor of the new
Huron East.
"Huron East
leadership both at
level and at county council. I believe
ratepayers deserve accountability,
responsibility and honesty in their
leader. I've demonstrated these
qualities in both my political and
professional careers. As mayor of
Huron East I would strive to ensure
all ratepayers, both rural and urban,
are treated equally and fairly," said
Steffler.
The Seaforth reeve made the
announcement at a recent Seaforth
town council meeting. Seaforth
Mayor Dave Scott announced at the
same meeting that he does not intend
to run. He plans to spend more time
reeve to run for Huron East top job
responsibility include being a
member of the Ontario Association
of School Business Officials, the
Ontario Catholic School Business
Officials Association and the Ontario
School Bus Association. She is also
on the Planning Committee for the
2002 Canadian Pupil Transportation
Conference.
Along with her duties on the
hospital board, other civic duties
include being a former member and
chair of the Seaforth Police Services
Board and member of the Royal
Canadian Legion for 20 years.
Steffler’s slogan, “Dedicated to the
Future of Huron East”, outlines the
main thrust of her campaign. “I’m a
strong voice on county council, I
listen to my constituents, and I
believe I'm the best person for this
job.”

Scott supports Stettler’s bid. "Lin
has always been a strong and
effective voice on town council
county council. Her integrity and
honesty will serve her well as mayor
of Huron East," said Scott.
Steffler, the current treasurer and
chair of the Finance and Property
Committee of the
Community Hospital Board,
several important issues in
upcoming term.
"Nutrient management is an
of concern. Grey Twp. has already
developed a comprehensive nutrient
management plan that's the best
the county. We have to continue
build on that strength."
She sees the growth of industry
important to the future of the new
municipality. "There are a number of
in
to
as
locations throughout our area that
are zoned industrial now or could be
developed. Encouraging industry
across Huron East would increase
our tax base and have a positive
effect on the local economy,” said
Steffler.
“Good water is a necessary item
for survival. We must do everything
that’s required to ensure good, clean,
clear water for all of us - both now
and in the future.”
On the issue of taxes, Steffler said,
“A number of services are essential
and will have to be paid for.
Although the savings of
amalgamation may be little or non
existent over time, what we should
work toward is getting the best
possible valbe for our tax dollar.”
She sees obvious challenges in
bringing together the operations of
five, long-established municipalities.
“It’ll be a challenge to bring together
the many varied viewpoints. Council
operations have to be open and
transparent. That’s the only way to
dispel the rumours that one
municipality will try to run the show.
It will take teamwork and trust to
ensure Huron East will succeed."
Steffler, and her husband of 33
years. Joe, have lived in various
parts of Huron East, including
Brussels and Walton. Residing in
Seaforth for the past 12 years, the
Stettlers have one son John, a
daughter-in-law Heather and two
grandchildren. Tanner and Davis.
Steffler has been employed by the
Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board for more than 25 years
and is presently manager of
transportation. Present positions of
