Summer 2000 is winding down and the school bags are being packed and the joy of normalcy is on the horizon. Schedules and appoint ments, meetings and commitments will once again fill the calendars. And you know, it is kind of nice to have a semblance of order to our lives. In its own way, it is sort of comforting to have life back to nor mal with a routine that we can count on. Unfortunately, this means that summer is over and holidays have ended and all that is left are the memories and the bills to pay. Summer, we try and pack so much into it! We have such high expecta tions for it and despite the attempt to hold on to it and even lengthen it, summer still continues to pass us by. What did you do this summer? Where did you go? What new expe riences did you enjoy and what kind of memories did you make? For some, hey ho, the status was quo and for others, it was just go, go, go! And yet, did it deliver, this “sum mer of 2000”, the “great millennium year”, or did it just pass you by and leave you sort of “wanting” and unfulfilled? Expectations are great but sorry to say, they don’t always pan out and the experiences of life often leave you wanting for more. But hey! That is just the way it is with the things of this world. They fill the gap, they satisfy for the moment but they have this ability to leave you grasping for more. It’s like the roller coaster ride at Darien Lake that I was on. It created anticipation, anxiety, fear and a thrill but it soon passed and faded away and found me Hakkerses I HE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2000. PAGE 13. in line again to try and recapture the experience. But you know, you don’t go back. It wasn’t the same. The ride was fun. The fear was still there! But it just wasn’t the same. I knew what to expect. I don’t know, maybe next year I'll try bungee jumping instead. (Who am I kidding, my heart couldn’t take it.) You see, like the summer, the experiences and thrills of life pass too quickly and they fade just as quickly and so you keep looking for more, never to find that which will last. But the good news, the gospel news is “though the grass withers and the flowers fall, the Word of our God shall stand forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) And His promises are sure! His Word consistently delivers and He is more than able to meet your expecta tions and bring you into the land that finally thrills the soul! Jesus said that He came to bring life and that life abundant and even now you can begin to enjoy to know consistent and lasting fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the author, the Maker of lives. Lloyd Sippel, Joann MacDonald and Leslie and Evelyn Caldwell were ushers and took up the offering. The Way Band and Allison Dow provided music for the service. Keith Dow read the gospel lesson Mark 10: 35-45. The worship song was There is a Redeemer. The scrip ture lesson was Ephesians l: 3-14. The sermon was entitled Are You a Soul Survivor. Rev. Ernest Dow talked about the recent TV show Survivor, in which the object was to be the sole survivor on an island and win $l million. He then explained how Jesus teaches us to be “soul sur vivors”. Rev. Dow drew parallels between the attitudes of the contestants to do whatever it took to be the sole sur vivor on the island and how to be a soul survivor in life. He explained how Christ’s attitude is “to empty himself, becoming a servant in our place”, the opposite of the contest ants on the show. Rev. Dow ended the sermon by encouraging the congregation to be soul survivors by showing acts of kindness. The service closed with the hymn O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go and the choral response Go Now in Peace. tfLea&e join fai utM&lttp Sunday Morning Worship Service ~ 10 a.m. Evening Worship Service ~ 7:30 p.m. “May the Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope. ” 2 Thessalonians 2:16 BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH Rev.
