A Young Perspective Celtic Roots Festival offers much enjoyment for youth Bv Sarah Mann On Aug. 11, 12, 13, Goderich held its Celtic Roots Festival at Harbour Park. Starting at noon every day, many people, including youths, came to enjoy the sweet sounds of Celtic music. I have been going to the Celtic Roots Festival for four years and this year I saw more young people there than ever before. The Celtic Roots Festival features some of the best groups from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, along with top notch talent from Vancouver to St. John's. Along with music there is also the amazing craft art including, jewelry, stained glass, and homemade candles. The band there that caught my eyes and my ears was Slainte Mhath (pronounced slawn- cha va) from Cape Breton. Take everything you thought you knew about Celtic music and throw it out the window. These young musicians are wailing out centuries-old traditional Celtic tunes with a contemporary appeal. All members of Slainte Mhath played more than one instrument including the fiddle, banjo, octave mandolin, keyboards, drums. Highland bagpipes, Scottish small pipes, reel pipes, and all sorts of per cussion. On top of all that Lisa Gallant (member of Slainte Mhath) also step-danced during some of their songs when she wasn't playing an instrument. The band was full of energy which also got the crowd energized and it wasn't long after they started playing that people start ed clapping their hands and dancing. Zoey Onn, Blyth, said that her favourite part of Celtic Festival was Slainte Mhath. Matt Campbell, Belgrave, said that his favourite part of the festival was the overall mood of the whole week end. He said he would definitely be returning next year. Campbell thought that the reason why youth enjoyed attending was because “it’s like a big playground where every one can be happy and have fun.” For more information on the Celtic Roots Festival visit the website at www.celticfestival.on.ca or call 519- 524-8221. For any of you who weren’t already planning to go next year...GO. I promise you won’t be disap pointed. ‘Somersaulting’ at Barrie’s Molson Park By Sarah Mann On Friday. Aug. 11, Somersault 2000 took place at Molson Park in Barrie. A few of the bands that played there were Eve 6, Treble Charger, A Perfect Circle, Foo Fighters. Our Lady Peace and Smashing Pumpkins. Eve 6 played a very upbeat set and they really got the crowd pumped for the rest of the day. They covered the song Jet Plane and did an excellent job of it. A Perfect Circle was a band that I personally was quite excited to see because I had heard lots about them but never actually heard them. A Perfect Circle is the lead singer of Tool's new band. They played a great set and I was quite impressed. They sound a lot like Tool so if you like Tool you will most likely enjoy A Perfect Circle. Our Lady Peace played a pretty good set, I'm not a big fan of them but I was quite impressed when they played old songs of theirs as well as their new songs. I thought for sure that they would play mostly their new stuff but they proved me wrong. During their set the sky started get ting dark and it was getting very cold. I could see flashes of lightning all around and then it started raining. The ram seemed to dampen some people's time and people even start ed leaving. The rain didn't last long which was a bonus and there were still bunches of people enjoying the bands. The only band that deeply disap pointed me at Somersault was the Smashing Pumpkins. This was their last tour and I was hoping that they would be playing more of their old songs than their new songs. I stayed for the first four songs and they were all new so the two other people I was with and I decided to leave. I had a pretty fun day at Somersault in Barrie. It's not my kind of concert but 1 ended up having a really good time.NOW IS THE TIME to think about Enjoying a Warped tour By Sarah Mann Vans Warped Tour 2000 took place this year at the Molson Park in Barrie on Saturday, July 22. Bands this year included acts such as NOFX, Green Day, Good Riddance, gob, the Suicide Machines, and the Deviates to name a few. My favourite band of the day was gob. They were one of the very few bands that I could actually see and I even had space to move around dur ing their set. During most of the bands, especially NOFX and Green Day, I couldn’t see anything due to the band’s popularity and my height. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy listening to them; I just wanted some space to move around a bit and enjoy myself a tad more. If none of the bands that were playing appealed to you, you also had the chance to watch skateboard ers, bmx bikers, and dirt bikers show their stuff on the half pipes and jumps that they had set up. There was even a guy who got shot out of a canon into a big safety net. All in all, my first Warped Tour was great. I got to see (sometimes) and more importantly hear, some of my favourite bands live in a great atmosphere. With the exception of the over priced water my day was perfect and I’ll most definitely be attending the Vans Warped Tour next year. IftriiMela VARIETY INC.
