Residents attend Owens reunion FROM BELGRAVE Arnold and Ila Mathers recently attended the first-ever Owens reunion for the descendants of one of the founding families of Belgrave. On Aug. 11, 12, 13 High Bluff Manitoba, near Portage La Prairie saw an influx of Owens from across Canada, as well as from the United States. Everyone came with albums, charts and stories to tell how they were part of the Owens’ lineage. The common thread was that great grandmother Isabelle Brandon Owens emigrated from Pettigo, Ireland in 1946 with her five chil dren and settled in the King County area near Bond Head. In 1853, the Owens family along with the McCrae and Brandon families relo cated and came to East Wawanosh township to clear the land and set up farming. John Owens III, the oldest son, married Elizabeth McCrae and homesteaded the farm where the East Wawanosh Public School is now located. His brother Mathew settled the present Gord Pengelly farm for a few years before moving to High Bluff, Manitoba with his five children. Another brother, James, settled the lot where the Belgrave arena, the ball park and the Owens subdivision now stand. He also relocated to the west in 1871. One sister Elizabeth married Henry McVetty and moved to Manitoba. The other sister Elinor married George Peacock and lived in Morris Twp. near Bluevale. More than 150 Owens descendants were in attendance for the weekend. Reunion activities included a talent show, golf tournament, children’s activities, dinner and dance, and a church service. Presentations were made by a descendant of each of the branches of the family. Arnold Mathers talked about the Belgrave connection and his grandmother Ellen Owens who was raised on the former Gord Bosman farm near Belgrave. Ellen Owens married Henry Mathers in 1909 and they had two children, Melville and Charlie. The next Owens reunion will be held in Belgrave in 2005 and will be hosted by the Ontario descendants of the Owens settlers.
