Acting veteran takes look back at unusual life Chris Wiggins, Fergus resident and long-time actor, reflects on 45 years in television, film and radio with his one-man show. Other Voices... Other Lives. “It has been, to say the least,” said Wiggins, “an unusual way to live. I have been killed in almost every building in Pioneer Village, been shot in the stomach by Jack Palance, survived with my family on a desert island after a shipwreck, been throttled by Christopher Plummer, given psychiatric advice in 165 therapy sessions, driven the last spike in Canada’s national railroad, and, on several occasions, affirmed that some breakfast cereals are (not oatmeal).” “Apart from that,” comments Wiggins, “it’s been a fairly quiet life." Other Voices ... Other Lives runs at Theatre on the Grand in Fergus on Aug. 17, 18 and 19, at 8 p.m., with a matinee on August 19 at 2 p.m. There will also be a display of memorabilia from the many years of Wiggins’ career on display in the Theatre Lobby. Tickets for Other Voices ... Other Lives are available at Theatre on the Grand, 244 St. Andrew Street, West, Fergus. Or call the Box Office' at (519) 787-1981. Comedic thriller returns to Bly th Axe fights, exploding phones, and bleeding paintings. The final production of the Blyth Festival's 2000 season promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats one moment and rolling in the aisles the next. Opening at the Blyth Festival, Aug. 24 When the Reaper Calls is back by popular demand. “We were turning people away last year.” said Artistic Director Anne Chislett, “The remount will allow those who missed it to have a great time and those who loved it to see it again.” The story of When the Reaper Calls surrounds two couples on a cottage retreat, whose pranks on each other weave a web of laughter and terror that keeps the audience in suspense until the last second. Under the direction of Eric Coates, the mainstage production of When the Reaper Calls will be able to contain more special effects than were possible in the Garage. Returning to the cast this season is Kate Hemblen of Toronto, who is delighted to be back in Blyth. Hemblen will be playing the role of Colleen again, whom she describes as “very sweet, well-intentioned and over excited.” Starring in the cast with Hemblen are Derek Boyes, Arlene Mazerolle, Shaun Clarke and Jenn McCaw. When the Reaper Calls runs at the Blyth Festival from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2. Tickets are $18.50 - $25 for adults, $8 for youths under 16. Doon Heritage Crossroads celebrates bountiful gardens On Sunday, Aug. 20 the farmers and villagers at Doon Heritage Crossroads will be reaping the bounty of the garden. The flower gardens are in full bloom and the vegetable gardens are heavily laden with fruit and vegetables. It is time to start putting away preserves for the snowy months ahead. Beans, tomatoes, peppers, early apples and other garden produce are bending the vines at Doon. At the turn of the century it was an important chore for the farm family to capture the bounty of the garden at its peak and to fill their cellars for the long winter ahead. Come out to Doon Heritage Crossroads and taste the preserves before they are put down for the year, pick up some recipes and enjoy a little bit of country in the city.
