Sports From the sidelines Devils end drought ered by many to have been the bestBy Hugh Nichol Give them credit! The Bluewater Fastball League teams were deter mined to re-estab lish their credibili ty and by the end of the 29th annual Brussels Tigers Fastball Tournament held three of the top four final posi tions. The Bluewater League has long considered themselves one of our area's elite groupings in terms of intermediate fastball, but their teams' futility in winning this partic ular tournament was becoming almost legendary. Despite the efforts of the Belmore Juniors, Belmore Steelhawks. Belmore Stingers, Chepstow Aces, Chepstow Colts, Chesley Texaco's, Clifford 4-Aces, Wingham Colts. Wroxeter Midgets, Wroxeter Royals, and the Wroxeter Rippers, the last Bluewater based team to win the championship was the 1987 edition of the Blucvale Cougars. The drought was finally ended by the Port Elgin Blue Devils, a first time participatant that won all four games played to take home $900 in prize money and the Wayne Lowe Championship Trophy. The Blue Devils opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the two-time defending champions from Monkton ending any hopes for a Muskrat three-peat that would have tied a tournament record set by the Wingham BPs in 1978-79-80. Following a 9-4 second game deci sion of the Camlachie Sox the Blue Devils claimed the champion-ship with relatively easy 8-1 mercies of Kitchener's Phoenix Aviation and the Camlachie Rebels. On the consolation side Wroxeter edged the Wingham Colts 3-2 in extra innings. The game was consid- played during the tournament and gave the Rippers their second “B” championship in the last three years. The Brussels Tigers failed in their attempt to defend last year’s title losing two of three games played including a 14-0 embarrass ment to the Fullarton A’s. So laugh able was the contest that by game’s end many of the spectators had turned their attention towards watch ing the public works department repair a broken sanitary sewer line at the Brussels Lions playground. The tournament, as always, fea tured excellent baseball but was not without its controversy. Due to a lack of teams accepting invites a division al round robin format was adopted. While this formula has become com monplace at many area tournaments the Brussels organizers were reluc tant to use it simply because the tie breaking rules are decided by mathe matical equations and not on the actual playing field. Luckily it came into effect only once during the tour nament. but naturally involved the host Brussels Tigers ball team. This weekend the Brussels ball diamonds will be home to the second annual Huron County Fastball League playoff tournament. Last season the league decided to forgo the traditional series-by-series play downs in favour of a weekend tour nament in an effort to shorten a post season that was extending into early October. The idea proved to be extremely popular amongst the players and at this spring’s annual meeting the teams voted unanimously to contin ue the tradition. Games begin Saturday at 9 a.m. on both diamonds with the championship game sched uled for 3 p.m. on Sunday. Last year the Brussels Tigers edged Walton 3- 2 in the final contest for their fifth consecutive HCFL championship. Look up The batter makes contact, but unfortunately pops it up in this game between the Auburn Ladies Slowpitch squad and Teeswater’s Limited Edition. The two teams took part in the Blyth tour nament this past weekend. Watson and Bone also shared goal tending while Rapson, Wood and McKee playing forward moved the ball with Rapson taking one goal and Wood, two. The game ended 3-3. Aug. 9 the Blackhawks played against Team 2. Nathan Thompson and McKee started in defense with Watson and Evan Smith as forwards and Jacob McGavin playing centre. There was a lot of action at each end and great shots made in the first half. After half-time Kelsey Smith and Jamee Johnston played forward with Mackenzie McGavin as centre. Wood gained control and moved it alone taking one of his two goals. The game ended 2-1 for the Blackhawks. Their last game will be tonight (Aug. 16). Brussels club member hosts ladies bowling tournament The Brussels U-9 I teams finished the regular season with a win and a loss as they prepared for the year- end tournament this weekend in Wallace. Elma 3 provided a challenge for the squad, July 31 when they jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first half. Andrew Lindsay was kept very busy in net, dealing with deflections and rebound shots. The home team went up by three before Brussels got on the board. Out of net for the second half, Lindsay took the ball from his own end for the lone Brussels score. Lindsay and Chris Becker aided Ducharme’s work between the posts. Randy Zwep played well. Thomas Johnston was strong on defense while Gavin Bowers and Evan Ducharme showed passing skills. On Aug. 7, a short-handed team travelled to Newry to take on Elma 2. Brussels took advantage early with Ducharme picking up a pass from Zwep and Bowers for the net- ter. Zwep's offense set up the second Brussels goal when Ducharme Zwep made some nice passing plays early in the contest with Jesse McKinnon working hard, Johnston displaying his rushing skills and Cam Schlosser showing his foot -work. Brussels held on for the 2-0 win.. Becker and Annamieka Kerhof were strong on defense. Brewers shutout Brussels Tigers It was a shut-out for the Walton Brewers when they met the Brussels Tigers, Aug. 1. Steve Leonhardt pitched a strong seven innings while Bruce Peam led Walton’s offense with two RBI’s and a great play in the field. After mounting the four-run lead through five, Walton saw their victo ry in jeopardy when Brussels had the bases loaded late in the game. Peam, however, did the job turning a triple play in the inning to thwart the rally. < INSURANCE PREMIUMS TOO HIGH?
