Teen woe turns to published work
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
On a whim. Blyth resident Kelly
Cook has become a published
author.
While working as a substitute
teacher. Cook became acquainted
with the Chicken Soup series of
books. The English teacher she
was filling in for used the short
stories and poems to begin each
class.
The Chicken Soup books offer a
collection of true life stories which
help people deal with the rough
times in life.
Having decided to pick up a copy
of the book geared for teens. Cook
says these books are particularly
good because it helps teenagers
realize they are not alone in what
they are going through.
After reading the stories, Cook
decided to submit a five-year old
poem via the e-mail address in the
book.
To explain the circumstances
surrounding her penning of the
poem. Cook included a short story
into which the poem was inserted.
Last October, she was informed by
mail that her story and poem was
amongst the 200 from which the
final selections would be made.
Cook says she had no expectations
when she submitted the writings.
Of the 60,000 pieces submitted.
Cook says the stories are first read
by teenagers who chose their
favourites. From there, the editors go
to work.
With releases signed and paper
work completed, Cook was informed
in March that her work had been
chosen and Chicken Soup for the
Teenage Soul 111 would be published
in April.
Cook says she was pleased to have
received an autographed copy of the
book as well as the response her
poem has gotten.
A couple of girls told her how
much the story/poem had touched
them when Cook participated in an
on-line discussion group through the
Chicken Soup web page.
Cook says anyone can submit
stories or thought to Chicken Soup.
The only criteria is that is it true.
Business owners watch for
bogus on-line directory bill
Business owners should be wary
of an authentic-looking invoice
soliciting payment for an on-line
business directory.
According to a representative of
Phone Busters, a national service
which deals with telephone and mail
fraud schemes, anyone receiving a
bill from Yellow' Business
Directory.Com should tear it up.
The invoice, mailed directly to
companies, asks for payment of
$25.52 for an on-line advertisement.
The form used looks deceptively like
a Bell Canada phone bill.
While the internet directory does
exist, the billing for payment is done
prior to a request for inclusion in the
listing.
Phone Busters, which is currently
investigating the matter, says several
calls have been received in the past
week regarding the invoice. There
were also several calls in early July.
It appears to be a cross-Canada
scheme.
Anyone wishing more information
on the Yellow' Business
Directory.Com invoices or if money
has already been submitted, call
Phone Busters at I-888-495-8501.
