did not give up and plated three
unearned runs in the third to make it
a 6-3 game.
This served as a wake-up call for
the home team as they scored three
in the fourth and two more in the
bottom of the fifth to close out the
scoring.
Steve Thomas took the win fan
ning eight Rangers on the evening.

U-7s hold their own in league play
The Walton Brewers took a win
and a loss in play last week when
they challenged Goderich Dukes and
Orioles.
July 24 saw the Brewers in
Goderich with pitcher Scott
Leonhardt taking on the Dukes.
Leonhardt led the team to a
resounding victory as he pitched a
one-hitter, struck out 13 of the 15
outs, smashed two hits and earned
three RBls.
Walton scored first plating five in
the top of the third and adding two
more in the fourth while shutting out
their opponent.
On Tuesday, the Orioles provided
a tougher challenge when they took
a 4-0 lead through four and a half on
Walton’s home diamond.
Walton struck in the bottom of the
fifth, tallying five.
The Orioles answered with three
and Walton pulled even at seven
after six innings.
The home team could not answer
the lone Goderich run in the top of
the seventh, taking the 8-7 loss.
Larry Lowes struck out five in five
innings for Walton and Leonhardt
finished the final two innings with
three strike-outs.
Leonhardt also popped a homer in
the sixth.
On June 20 the Brussels U-7 teams
hit the field for a very exciting game.
There was end-to-end action
throughout the entire game.
The Tigers had many opportuni
ties, but couldn’t get it past the goal
posts until late in the second half.
Scoring for the Tigers was Nick
Gowing.
The final was 4-1 for Team 2.
On July 4 the Brussels Tigers took
on Listowel 3. Great defense by the
Tigers maintained an edge until late
in the game. Both teams felt the heat
but maintainea the desire for a win
so that after the final whistle they
were stalemated in a 4-4 tie.
Scoring their first goals were
Nikki McIntosh and Emily Kerkhof.
Gowing scored two.
July 11 was a tough game. The
Tigers felt the absence of some play
ers. Listowel took full advantage of
this opportunity and got four unan
swered goals.
There was great goaltending by
Emily Prior and Emily Baker.
Brussels had several chances but
couldn’t get it past the rested
Listowel squad.
The final score was 4-1 Listowel.
The Tigers played Elma July 18.
Back on track the Tigers fought a
hard battle and won 3-1.
Scoring for the Tigers was Ryan
Hullett Squirts
enjoy hit parade
The Hullett Squirts took to the dia
mond with big bats and hard hitting,
July 24,when they travelled to
Bayfield.
Behind 8-3 after two, Hullett
began to claw its way back, tallying
five in the top of the third.
Quieting the Bayfield bats in the
latter innings, Hullett held them to
just four runs in the fourth and fifth
while pushing 12 across the plate.
Hullett earned the 20-13 win.
On the mound for Hullett were
Joel Salverda, Derek Dolmage,
Anthony Wilts, Julian Salverda and
Eric Radford.
Baker, one and Gowing, two.
The Brussels squad showed some
terrific offense and the defensive
coverage was great.
July 25 the squad had home field
advantage for a change.
But Newton came on strong.-
Rachel Cousins played an out
standing game in net. Defensive
duties were held by Megan Miners,
Jason Warwick, Kerkhof and R.
Baker. Gowing led the offense with
Prior, Kasey King and E. Baker.
Persistence and determination held
but the Tigers couldn’t get it through
the sticks.
E. Baker took charge of the post in
the second half.
The final was 4-0 for Newton.
The Tigers have only two games
left in the schedule. The year-end
tournament will be held on Aug. 19.

Brussels U-9 soccer squad
settles for tie against Elma
The Brussels U-9 I squad had to
settle for their first tie of the season
when Elma II visited July 24.
The home team started well when
Trevor Wood went in alone for the
first netter of the match.
Wood and Evan Ducharme were
thwarted with good saves by the
Elma netminder before Ducharme
took a shot for the side of the net,
kicking across the front and in the far
side.
Ducharme took over goalie duties
from Andrew Lindsay in the second
half, making some excellent stops.
However, the constant push by Elma
resulted in two unanswered goals.
The first came on a cross net shot
with the second sailing over
Ducharme’s head.
“All the players worked hard,”
said Coach Steve Bowers.
