A Young Perspective Drinking and driving impresses no one By Elyse DeBruyn Her hair was brown, her eyes were hazel. She liked rap and loved pizza. She enjoyed going out for coffee and never passed up a good party. She won’t see her l Sth birthday or go off to college to start a life of her own. She will never get married or experience the joys of children. She won’t be there for my wedding day or see my first child. All of this taken Punld’est away by a drunk driver. I don’t understand why people drink and drive. It doesn’t make you look cool. It won't impress “that girl” or “that guy”. You don’t accom plish anything from it. People say it is a rush. What a rush it must be swerving all over the road looking like an idiot. I think the most pathetic excuse for drinking and driving is ‘I didn't at Spider have any other way to get home.’ You can stay the night, get a ride, call home, or here is a big shocker, stay sober! I'm sure your parents would rather get a call to come pick you up than get a call that you had been in a ter rible car accident. You may not care if the life you take is your own, but have you thought about who would care? How do you think your parents will respond being told that their child is dead? Would they care? If you don’t care about your fami ly, what about someone else’s fami ly? How would you feel taking the life of someone’s father? Leaving the wife to raise children by herself. Forcing her to make decisions she never thought she would have to make. Land Acres worth Could you live with yourself? Even if you don’t value your life - value the lives of others. There is no excuse for drinking and driving. It’s all up to you to make the intelligent decision to drive sober. Too many of our peers drink and drive. How many more people have to die before we realize the dangers of this moronic choice? the trip By Sarah Mann On July 16, I had the privilege of travelling with local punk band Perish to Marmora where they were playing “Punkfest 2000” at a place called “Spider Land Acres”. Punkfest is a birthday party that “Spider”, as his friends like to call him, throws for himself every year (this year Spider turned 63). This man has bands from all over come and play at his place to celebrate. I had heard different ideas about Punkfest and had mixed feelings about going. One rumour I heard was that last year a guy was there for only 10 minutes and he was stabbed seven times. While this may or may not be true I did not experience any bad vibes at this year’s bash. The people there were very friendly and welcoming and proved my belief that looks can be deceiving. The sporadically shaven hair, patched jeans and stud ded leather jackets may imply that these were a bunch of teenagers looking for trouble but by getting to know them you would find other wise. These were just a bunch of teenagers who finally found a place where they will not be looked down upon for their choice of hair colour. Perish played an excellent show despite the fact that the stage had limited space and there were no Finding the fun in summer By Sarah Mann I don’t know about you but once summer comes I find myself com plaining that there is nothing to do. Well, I learned that if you actually take the time to look for things to do instead of waiting for them co come to you, there is lots to do. Here’s a list of just a few possibil ities to get you started. Aug. 11 is the date for Sommersault 2000. It’s a day-long alternative rock concert hosted by Our Lady Peace, taking place in Barrie at Molson Park. Bands such as Eve 6, Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle, and Foo Fighters are playing. For ticket information call TicketMaster, (416) 870-8000. The Goderich Celtic Festival is taking place Aug. 11-13 at Harbour Park. If you’re looking for a place to Movie review relax and have a good time while lis tening to great music this is the place for you. Canada's Wonderland, just north of Toronto, is a great place for a day trip. With great rides and an excel lent waterpark it’s a fun way to spend a day. If you don’t want to travel that far, Sports World in Kitchener offers a waterpark, go-carts and much more. It's fun to take a road trip with a bunch of friends. Grand Bend is an awesome place to go. The beach is right there and exhibits a variety of unique stores. Stratford is another amazing town in which to spend a day. I could spend the whole day just looking through the stores and shops but there is also the Stratford Festival. For more information on the Festival call I-800-567-1600 or visit the website www.stratford- festival.on.ca. Theatre workshops for children aged nine-12 are offered at the Blyth Lions Park. There are four different weekly workshops (Puppetry-Aug. 7-11, Mime-Aug. 14-18, Story Telling-Aug. 21-25, Musical Theatre-Aug. 28-Sept. 2). Price is $50 each per child or $160 for all four. It’s Mondays to Fridays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids need to be registered by Sunday, July 30. Call for a registration form, or come to the park on Saturday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Spaces are limited. The August Drama Festival is organized and taught by Shannon Scott; trained in acting, voice, music and dance. Call her at 523-4429 for more information microphones for the vocals. It is a long drive but it’s definitely worth it. I would recommend plan ning to stay the weekend there. Spider has a beautiful place with lots of room to set up a tent and camp. We had to leave as soon as Perish was done playing as we had a long drive home ahead of us. As I was leaving I picked up a couple flyers to have as a memory and I learned that this isn’t the only weekend long party that Spider throws. He also throws a Labour Day party which is Sept. 2, 3, 4, and a Halloween/Thanksgiving Bash which is Oct. 7, 8, 9. All the profits made are for Animal Welfare. Holly Hunter and Dermot Mulroney play two San Francisco homicide detectives. Together they begin to piece togeth er the puzzle. Jon Amiel directs one of the best horror movies I have seen since The Silence of the Lambs. This movie was scary in a differ ent way. Your know what is coming next, but you still get scared when it happens. I also found it interesting because it has a lot of information about serial killers that I never knew. I suggest you rent this movie. You won’t be disappointed! This movie is rated R. 472-6009. If you end up going to one of Spider’s shows have fun and I might even see you there.
