July 17. when they held them scoreless in the final innings. Hullett struck first in the bottom of the first, with two runs. Goderich Twp. came back with three of their own before putting six more on the board in the top of the third for a 9-2 lead. Hullett took the lead and held on in the bottom of the inning, pushing eight across the plate with help from a homerun by Josh Nurse. Both teams were shut out for the final two, leaving the tally at 10-9. Anthony Wilts. Derek Dolmage, Eric Radford and Joel Salverda took turns on the mound. Blyth Squirts beat Walton The Walton Squirt Boys were over-matched July 17 when Blyth took them 20-0. Blyth got started in the first when a walk to Trevor Hopf resulted in a run due to overthrows. Blake Miller bunted, Darcey Cook and Mark McCracken doubled and walks were issued to Devin Jenkins and Dickey Gregg. In the second Adam deBoer got on base after a third strike. Cook sin­ gled, Kyle Nixon doubled and Jenkins walked. Hits tallied in the final three innings included a bunt single by Miller, singles by Cook, deBoer, double by Hopf and triples by McCracken and Cook. Gregg got to third on overthrows. A walk went to Jenkins. Cook pitched for Blyth. A swing and a hit The batter makes contact in this game at the Blyth ball fields this past weekend. The Lumber Kings and the 8th Line, Wingham and Blyth area teams were among the competitors in the Blyth Old Dogs slow-pitch tournament. (Vicky Bremner photo) U-lls start July strong PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 The Brussels U-ll squad started July strong, taking wins in both early games. It was a shutout, July 8 when Elma came to town. Trevor McArter led the way, tally­ ing three with Jordan Campbel! hit­ ting the net for two. Singles were scored by William King, Kristen McArter and Andrew Van Vliet. Brandon Kellington, Kari Bell and Devon Warwick played great defense while Jodi McIntosh, Lacey McArter, Lindsay Watson and Chris Barton held tight as halfbacks, said Coach Kim McArter. Kyle Griffith, King and T. McArter were strong on the forward line. Goalie Michael Dietz blanked Elma. The following week, Listowel pre­ sented a much tougher challenge, with the lone Brussels goal by T. McArter the only netter of the game. Coach McArter said that thanks to great defense and quick actions by players such as Van Vliet, King, K. McArter and Ami Schimanski, the team was able to hold the 1-0 score. GRADUATION RHONDA HOWATT Rhonda received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at the convocation at Lakehead University May 27, 2000 and has successfully completed the R.N. finals. She has accepted a position at Guelph General Hospital as part of the operating room team. Rhonda is the daughter of Murray and Joan Howatt. Congratulations Rhonda! Love, Mom, Dad, Bryan & Brent. A different way of banking. 1 YEAR CLOSED MORTGAGE A good crowd was assembled in the basement of Knox United Church on Tuesday afternoon, July 18 to celebrate those who have reached the 80 milestone in their life. Lorna Cook welcomed all those present and turned the program over to Muriel Coultes and Donna Shaw. Mrs. Coultes read a poem entitled, A Neighbour, as well as several short stories and jokes from the book. She Who Laughs, Lasts. Dr. Sanford Clare entertained with musical numbers on the piano and was followed by Ellen Procter with two vocal numbers. Mrs. Coultes then read a story of making things from scratch, which brought back memories. Ross Anderson and Lome Campbell favoured with several selections o.n the mouth organ and piano, which was followed by vocal numbers by Lila Procter, who also led in a sing-a-long. Donna Shaw read a poem entitled Family Reunion, followed by Alf Nichol at the piano. Everyone sang What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Rev. Ethel Miner Clare was intro­ duced as the new minister after which she welcomed everyone and offered the grace. All those who had turned 80 with­ in the last year were invited to blow out the candles on the cake and Dr. Clare played musical numbers while the refreshments were served.Janisa Coultes thanked the group. U-9 I challenges III It was a very good match between the Brussels U-9 I and Brussels U-9 III soccer teams when they chal­ lenged each other, July 17. Robert Cronin was strong in net for the Brussels III squad, stopping several shots in the first half. The teams went into the second half with q scoreless tie. Thomas Johnston broke the stale­ mate when he picked up a Gavin Bowers’ rebound and pushed it in around the post for Brussels I. Andrew Lindsay topped off the Brussels I scoring when he went in alone for the netter. The final was 2-0. Vanessa Ropp and Randy Zwep worked hard for the Brussels I team and Jesse McKinnon, Chris Becker and Johnston were strong in the full­ back positions, said Assistant Coach Ray Becker. Brewers blank Goderich Orioles The Walton Brewers earned a shutout against the Goderich Orioles, July 18, blanking them 10- 0. Steve Leonhardt pitched a three- hit gem, with Jeff Robinson pacing the offense as he earned three RBIs and scored three including a homer in the third ’■Residential Properties only Some restrictions apply.
