Joan Golden new minister at Brussels United By Janice Becker Citizen staff After several months serving the Brussels United Church community, Joan Golden has officially become the minister. As a student diaconal minister Golden will be working 30 hours a week between the congregations in Brussels and Ethel as she continues her studies through the Centre for Christian Studies in Winnipeg. Golden in very pleased that tech nology will allow her to study while she works in the two communities. She will be moving with her hus band Richard, an ordained minster with the Monkton congregation, to the Brussels manse. “He felt it would be much easier for me (to live in Brussels) since I have more trav elling with the two charges,” says Golden. Focusing on social ministry in her current year of study. Golden says she will be working-at the women’s shelter in Goderich. With a background in long-term care facilities, as well as accounting and vojunteer management. Golden thought Huronlea would be a great place to do her community work. However, her teachers believed stretching her abilities in another direction would broaden her knowl edge. “It is wise to see other areas,” she agrees. She began following the path to the ministry 10 years ago while liv ing in Kingsville. When the congre gation needed extra volunteers, she began doing lay pastoral visits for the church. “I really loved that,” she says. When her husband was ordained in 1993 and the family moved to Englehart in northern Ontario, she also discovered her love for congre gational work. As she worked more and more with the communities, in Englehart and after her arrival in Brussels last fall, she found her role in the min istry becoming more defined. Golden’s focus as a diaconal min ster will be on Christian education, outreach and pastoral care. “I see a Official named Serving the Brussels and Ethel United Church communities since last fall, Joan Golden was named the minister recent ly. need for inter-generational pro grams,” she says. The elders have so much to offer as do the youth. We need to work in the church and the community.” Golden praises the involvement of the congregation in community activities. “Brussels and Ethel have been so welcoming. It is an awe some responsibility to have a student minister. It is extra work for them.” She is very pleased she was recently granted permission to do sacraments and weddings. “I can now do the full functions at this charge,” she says.
