Brussels Livestock report
191 veal on offer, beef uvg. $105
Total receipts at Brussels
Livestock for the week ending July
14 were 2,109 head of cattle and 367
lambs and goats.
The fed steers and heifers sold at
prices $1 to $2 higher. The cows
traded on a very strong market. The
veal sold on a steady market with the
lambs also selling on a steady trade.
All weights of Stockers sold at strong
prices.
There were 619 fed steers on offer
selling from $102 to $108 with sales
to $123.75. Thirty steers consigned
by Bill Klages, Desboro, averaging
1.282 lbs. sold for an average price
of $106.84 with one gold steer
weighing 1,255 lbs. selling for
$123.75 to Norval Meat Packers.
A black steer consigned by Kada
Farms, Bluevale, weighing 1,375
lbs. sold for $118.25 to Holly Park
Meat Packers, with their overall
offering of nineteen steers averaging
1,345 lbs. selling for an average
price of $109.10. Twelve steers
consigned by Strong Farms, Gorrie,
averaging 1,312 lbs. sold for an
average price of $111.51 with sales
to $116.75. Twelve steers consigned
by Robert Benedict, Kerwood,
averaging 1,260 lbs. sold for an
average price of $109.04 to the high
of $116.
Fourteen steers consigned by
Springglad Farms, Kirkton,
averaging 1,270 lbs. sold for an
average price of $106.30 to the top
of $115.50. One red steer consigned
by Mark and Paul Pennington,
Mildmay, weighing 1,255 lbs. sold
for $ 114. Forty-four steers consigned
by J. K. Gielen Farms, Crediton,
averaging 1,388 lbs. sold for an
average price of $105.67 with sales
to $109.50.

Pork Congress offers fresh look
Showcase 2000 promised to show
everyone the very best Ontario’s
pork industry had -and it did. With
beautiful weather, intriguing
speakers and an early summer
celebration, the 27th Annual Ontario
Pork Congress was another shining
testament to its organizers,
volunteers and industry
representatives.
It was the perfect launching point
for the new millennium, and plans
are already underway to make next
year’s event that much better.
Dublin’s Tony DeKroon took
home first and second prizes in the
Junior Barrow class. Grand
Champion Showman this year was
Robert McCallum while Nancy
Perrin picked up both Reserve

Other winners included Kaitlin
Smith from Iona Station in Novice
Showmanship, the second time she’s
won that class in two years and Eline
Peters in the Junior Showmanship
category.
The Ontario Swine Improvement
Showmanship Scholarships went to
Ryan Peters of Embro in the Novice
division -a repeat for Ryan -while
Eline Peters took home the Junior
division title with Jennifer Smith
receiving the Senior award.
In other divisions and
competitions, the Innovations award
went to Wayne Herlick of Tavistock

Guelph, in recognition for his years
of dedication and hard work to the
pork sector.
In other news from the Pork
Congress, Pam More of Arthur won
the Gold sponsor draw prize of
$1,000 while total sales from the Pig
Art Auction totalled $4,895.
