Sports Challenging the opponent It was a tough game for the Blyth Bantams when the Clinton Cosmos visited, July 12. Squirts The Blyth Squirts ball team took a win and a loss in play last week. With Goderich 2 in town July 10, Blyth allowed a two-run lead by the visitors before their first at-bat. Katie McClinchey took a walk for Blyth to begin the comeback, with Amber Sellers, Lindsey Malhiot, Alyssa Ruttan, Erin Moore and Kendall Whitfield following up with singles. Ellen Procter got on base with a walk. Goderich was kept off the board in the second while Blyth added five. Squirt Boys win win 1,lose 1 The visitors loaded the bases in the top, of the third before Malhiot nabbed a pop-fly at first for an out. In their at-bat, Blyth’s Stephanie Root tapped a single, Malhiot and Ruttan took walks and Whitfield doubled in the runs. Though Goderich earned some runs on walked batters, Blyth held onto the four-run lead for the 18-14 victory. McClinchey, Ruttan and Malhiot pitched. Blyth took to the diamond in Varna the following night for a tough match-up. In the three-run first for Blyth, Procter walked and Whitfield sin­ gled. With Varna fighting back, Procter got two out at the plate. Vicky Cook’s was amongst the three’walks taken by Blyth in the top of the second before Root singled them home. With the back and forth scoring, Varna edged the visitors 14-10. Whitfield and Moore shared time on the mound. 12-10 Blackhawks win On Wednesday, July 12 the Brussels U-6 Blackhawks took to the soccer field against Team 2. Nathan Watson started centre with Jamee Johnston and Janessa Smith as forwards. They moved the ball quickly towards the opposition where Watson made several great shots on net but had it taken away by defense Jarod Logan and Nathan Thompson. Shots were made at net with Derek Wood making great saves and kick­ ing it back into play. Smith did a great head ball then Logan and Thompson moved it for­ ward. After a switch Jacob McGavin and Drew McKee making great control of the ball in the other end. In the second half Heather Bone was centre with Mackenzie McGavin and Johnston as forwards. They moved quickly to keep control of the ball. Team 2 had the kick and moved with the ball where Woods’ gained control making shots on net and scoring. Watson and McGavin also shared the goaltending keeping the ball out of their net. The game ended 1 -0 for the Blackhawks. Darcey Cook led off with a walk for the visiting team. Following his steal home, Trevor Hopf and Kyle Nixon managed to score in the same manner. In the bottom of the inning, Mark McCracken made an excellent out, grabbing a line drive and picking a runner off at third. In the second. Cook walked then stole the second bag. He crossed the plate on overthrows. Hopf walks then steals home. Justin Ritchie tapped a single in the third. Belmore exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. However, Blyth came back quickly when Cook singled, Hopf tripled and Nixon singled. In the tip of the sixth, Cook got on base then stole home before Hopf and Blake Miller smacked home­ runs. Ritchie singled and McCracken doubled. With only seven players at the game, Blyth had on automatic out in each at-bat. Cook pitched and Blyth took home the 12-10 win. Brussels hosts men's tourney U-lls shutout Elma, down Listowel 1-0 It’s two wins for the Brussels U-11 soccer team in recent league action. On July 4, the squad hosted Elma and shut-out the visitors 8-0. Scoring for the home team were Tevor McArter with three, Jordan Campbell with two and William King, Kristen McArter and Andrew Van Vliet each booting in one. Great defense by Brandon Kellington, Kari Bell and Devon Warwick helped shut down the opponents while the halfbacks Jodi McIntosh, Lacey McArter, Lindsay Watson and Chris Barton held tight. U-9s lose tough one to Listowel Forwards Kyle Griffith, King and T. McArter kept the ball moving to the Elma end. Goalie Michael Dietz had a great game in net. Things were tighter July 11 when the team edged Listowel 1-0. Coaching staff credited the great defense and quick action of players like Van Vliet, King, K. McArter and Ami Schimanski with keeping Brussels in the game. Dietz had another stellar night in net, while T. McArter scored the winning goal. A men’s pairs lawn bowling tour­ nament sponsored by Brussels Livestock Sales was held Thursday, July 13 with 16 teams competing. Prizes were presented by Marie McCutcheon, representing Brussels Livestock Sales and drawmaster, Jim Coultes, as follows: first, Gordon Bosman and Louis Ebel, Brussels, three wins - 50; second, John Muir and Bob Doig, Seaforth, three wins - 43; third, George Woods and Ivor Newton, St. Marys, two wins - 50; fourth, Bob Thompson, Exeter and Harry Jacobi, London, two wins - 42 plus one; fifth, Don McKinnon and Stuart Lane, Lucknow, two wins 42; sixth Roy Piper and Phil Leahy, Elmira, two wins - 39; seventh, John Brinks, Palmerston and Ted Roloefson, Arthur, two wins - 37; eighth. Bill Graham and Reg Near, St. Marys, two wins 32; consolation, Kevin Rumig, Goderich and Neil Beuerman, Seaforth, one win - 53. The July 10 game against Listowel began well for the Brussels U-9 I squad, but the lack of extra players on a hot night took a toll.
