Birdy Nest furniture cheap, cheap, cheap FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch Many turn out for events By JoAnn McDonald Another great weekend at the Branch was enjoyed by a variety of people. The faithful euchre players filled eight tables on Saturday afternoon. The successful couple of Charlie and Millie McDonald took first place and just behind was John and Iola Subject. The third place pair was Harvey Edgar and Ed Stewart. The men’s lone hand winner was Jim Coultes and for the ladies Ilene Miller. There’s another euchre in two weeks. Saturday night saw a wonderful crowd helo celebrate Ken and President Linda Bird’s 25th wedding anniversary. Sunday night was singles dance night and a good crowd enjoyed the music- of the “Westemaires”. They are held every two weeks. Friday night suppers continued this past week with sausage on a bun being enjoyed by diners. The menu for this week was still unknown at press time, but whatev er it is, it’s certain to be as tasty as always. Summertime is always a little slower at the Branch but it is cool there. So drop in and have a visit with friends at the Branch. A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Well, there’s another mystery that remains unsolved in my mind. It seems I forgot to leave a column for last week’s paper but visiting Ottawa did not seem like a good excuse, so called a friend for The Citizen e-mail and swooshed a Canada Day note to Brussels. But when the paper came out - no words from Ottawa. Does that mean those words are still loose in space or where do e- mails and faxes go that are not received? Oh another thing to won der about. (Ed note: Sorry, didn't receive until after press date. Here it is.) Corker is the new play at Bly th Festival - it shows the challenges of life both for the busy folk and for the truly challenged on many levels. It’s another good one to see and will get you thinking. I hope you had a good Canada Day. Ralph, Curt, Zora, and I and 100,000 others partied on Parliament Hill. A variety of music kept the mood light. Then pomp and circumstance brought Jean Chretien, Adrienne Clarkson, as well as the RCMP musical ride, and various other dig nitaries. Though small, it is tidy and uncluttered, appearing more like a living room than a store. Canadians were part of a show that had something to suit everyone. Fireworks are always part of the festivities, and the ones on the Hill shooting over the Peace Tower were awesome, but being awakened from a sleep in a tent to have a truly great display unfold is nearly beyond words. It felt like you were under the sparkles as we viewed the 20-minute display from under the trees in a camp ground in Greely. Their dis play had been rained out on the first so we had fireworks two nights in a row. Wow! Two nice people went to heaven last week. Ralph Pearson was a long-time neighbour on Tory Hill and was one of the folk who was consistently nice-nice to animals, nice to neighbours and especially nice to the children. He set an example for our neigh bourhood. Jean Bell was the Sears Lady when Chris and Curt worked for Oldfield’s. Her pleasant manner, grace and common sense helped them learn the business world. As a church friend and neighbour Jean showed the world calm and quiet dignity. Both these folks had qualities that the world needs more of and so as we miss them in our lives, perhaps trying to follow their example by doing as they did, we’ll preserve their memory. The river is being well used this week. Canoes and lots of kids fish ing make it a pleasant destination for a walk or bike ride. Bye Now, Betty GW When asked about the name of her business, she credits her family and friends with helping her decide. The “nest” idea was derived from furnishings for the home or nest and “birdy” from “cheap, cheap, cheap”. A Brussels native, VanLanduyt has wanted to try her own business and believes it is important for the vil lage to have more storefronts filled. Understanding the plight of many lower income families or young peo ple just starting out, VanLanduyt says she wants to offer good quality furniture and appliances at good prices. Attending auctions, warehouse and private sales, she says she is very picky about what she buys. “If it doesn’t sell in the shop, I want the items to be something I would put in my own house.” Her frequent shopping trips will also provide regular changes in the inventory.
