An hour a week can start lifetime of reading pleasure One last hug Walton Public School Principal Alice McDowell settled in with kindergarten students Marina Glanville, left, and Jessie Fraser, as volunteers received recognition for their contribution to the school over the past year, during an appreciation day, June 28. Students were also given memory boxes and a video of the year’s activities as mementoes of the school. Educational experts agree that the more children read, the more they’ll enjoy reading, and the better readers they’re likely to become. Parents play a key role in fostering a love of reading, even starting as early as sharing picture books with babies. Book Adventure™, a free, non profit, online reading incentive program at www.bookadventure.org, and Sylvan Learning Centres recommend Canadian parents spend at least one hour per week or 10 to 15 minutes a day reading with their kids. “Reading is such an important life skill and source of great personal enjoyment. But reading proficiency and habits develop young so it’s important for parents to encourage their children’s love of reading early. Just an hour a week can start a lifetime of reading,” explains Dr. Rick Bavaria, vice-president, education. Sylvan Learning Centres. TIPS FOR DEVELOPING GOOD READING SKILLS Starting the Reading Adventure with Pre-schoolers Storytelling is the basis for reading and writing. Reading and telling stories together helps stimulate these skills. Reading aloud stimulates imagination. It also helps orient children to language and the concept of written words. When reading aloud, point to the words as you speak them. Follow the sentence with your finger so that children begin to recognize how words appear on the page. Don’t expect to be able to read together for long period of times. But read ofterf Between ages four and seven children will begin to recognize words on the page. Regular reading with Grade School Children Even when children are reading on their own, reading aloud together can still help develop language skills. Mistakes should be treated as an opportunity to learn a new word, not an embarrassment. Encourage your child to try to sound out a strange word. Encourage talk and discussion as this contributes to the development of language skills and can help with reading. Ask everyone around the dinner table to talk about his or her day. Introduce children to your local public library and get library cards for everyone in the family. Check with teachers and “librarians to confirm the appropriate reading level for your child’s age. Get recommendations from them on good children’s books. Read newspapers and magazines together. Help them read captions on photos. Set up or designate shelves in a child’s room for their own “library.” Reading opens doors to a child’s future Business Directory Large & Small Trucks fridgecarts - piano dollys- moving blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini STRICKLANDS . 344 Huron Rd. 324-9381 \GODERICH 1-800-338-1134 / / INSTANT FAX A AS F.A.S.T AS PHONE Send your paperwork by FAX instantlyl eg. statements, contracts, auction ads, favorite recipes, obituaries, messages...
