However, the expense to ship the tractor was considerable so Schade passed up the opportunity. Soon, Roche was offering to transport the tractor both ways free of charge when his trucking company’s trailers passed near the area. So, with arrangements made for a pick-up in Listowel, Schade’s 710B will soon be heading west. He will follow, spending several days with family and friends prior to the heritage show. By Janice Becker Citizen staff It was coincidence and a ball cap which resulted in Neil Schade’s rare Case tractor being trucked to Manitoba for an international showcase later this month. Schade, a Brussels collector of antique tractors, was visiting family and friends in the western province when he stopped at his favourite restaurant one day. Soon, a man wearing a Case IH cap sat at his table and began to chat. Schade believes he too was wearing a Case cap, which may have peaked the stranger’s interest. Schade soon learned that tablemate, Brian Roche was one of the province’s best known collectors as well as the owner of an international trucking company. The men became well acquainted with Schade telling Roche of a recent acquisition. When Schade’s wife passed away, he needed something to do, he says. Then, two years ago he saw the sale bill for an auction in Lakelet. Though he already had nine Case tractors, he went for a look. With a smile, he says he could not refuse the 710B row cropper with wide front axle, one of only 144 ever built. He knew it was a rare one and in good condition so he drove the tractor home to Brussels. Over the next few months, he worked on the tractor and had it ready for the fall Thresher reunion in Blyth.
