I began writing the Walton news sometime in 1993. I remember thinking about all the neat things that the kids did at school and that it was time everyone should read about it. If they are like me, parents enjoy seeing their children's name or picture in the paper. I keep a scrap book for such things. So the Walton Public School news began. The teachers were always patient and took time out of their busy schedule every Friday after school to give me the scoop of what had gone on during the week. So no more school news, no more asking, “Well, what went on this week?" and the reply, “Oh nothing ... we did nothing all week.” There is no more WPS. But some thing that can never disappear are the precious memories, the memories of the ‘little school with the big heart.' For those of you who don’t know I thought I would let you know where each of the teachers and principal will be going next year: Tina Burkholder - Seaforth Public School as well as Elaine Haney, Alice McDowell will take the principal’s job at Grey Central where Laura Scott will also be teaching, Joan Vandendool will teach at Hullett and Della Bennett will be at Huron Centennial. In my opinion those schools will all be greatly blessed and enriched by having these teach ers and principal as a part of the team. Good luck! So for. one last time I will put in names from the annual talent show and Grade 4 appreciation. We had Nicole Williamson and Bridget Blake singing, Jodi McIntosh and Nicole Williamson performing a dance, Andrew van Vliet played the piano as did Laura Bowers. Then Bridget, Laura, Jodi and Nicole all sang together. Then the Grade 4s came forward where Mrs. Haney presented them with certificates. Mrs. McDowell called Bridget Blake and Chris Holmes forward so that she could present them with the Ontario Principal’s Council Award. Then Laura Bowers received the Shirley Lyon Award for Reading and English. The Grade 4s had performed a play called, The Elves and the Shoemaker which Mrs. Zwep had taped, and parents and visitors watched this very well done play. It was then to the library where the Grade 4s enjoyed eating the cake which had their names written on it. On Tuesday, June 27 the talent show continued with the kinder gartens doing a skit/recitation and the bird dance. Avery and Taylor Bennewies sing two songs. Joelle Glanville, Olivia Beuermann, Hillary Beuermann and Sarah will all play the piano. Sarah Elhgsen and Hillary Beuermann will dance and the Grade Is will recite a poem. On Wednesday it will be volunteer appreciation with the other kinder garten class doing a skit/recitation. Gavin Bowers, Danica Zwep and Janelle Vanderveen will play the piano. Bradley Fraser will crack everyone up with his jokes. Danica Zwep and Jodi Keys will skip as well as Jessica Baer and Nicole McIntosh. The Grade 2 boys will perform. Jessica Baer and Nicole McIntosh will dance. So it will be a busy week and everyone is invited to attend the above events. CELEBRATION The life and history of WPS was celebrated on Sunday with close to 700 people in attendance during the course of the day. With Mrs. Toll at the door greeting people, the memo ry book being sold in the library, class pictures from years ago deco rating the walls as well as children’s art work and the gym filled with more food than you can ever imag- FROM WALTON ine, the school was a busy place. The program started the evening with Neil McGavin, Graeme Craig and Alice McDowell giving the opening remarks. Neil had asked how many people had gone to this school and a lot of hands filled the air. Graeme read a letter from a for mer student, Dr. Clayton Sellers. Then 78 students filled the stage and sang their hearts out with the song Go with a Song in Your Heart. Jim Cook and Patty Banks sang, Thank God for Kids followed by Darlene Vanderveen and Deb Siertsema who sang and got people singing and clapping with their songs of A/mzys be a Child, Jesus is a Friend of Mine and Put Your Hand in the Hand. Barb Durrell. School rep. was Alice McDowell and community rep was Mane McGavin. Laura Elligsen then performed Power of the Dream and / will Always Love You, followed by Phyllis Mitchell and her grandson Jamie Mitchell who led ole Gus on stage. They played some rousing Scottish pieces on the violin (Well Gus didn’t. He just kind of lay there wondering when he could go home.) It was quite the show when the whole Mitchell clan got on stage and sang, How Much is That Doggie in the Window. They let everyone know that Gus was not for sale. And it is quite wonderful to know that yes, Gus did graduate from WPs and Emerson presented him with his very own graduation hat. Congratulations Gus! Barb Durrell then presented George and Gloria Love who have been keeping the school going since 1984, with a gift basket. Jane Zwep was presented with a gift as well as was Alice Yuill, the school’s REA. Neil McGavin then gave the histo ry of the old school and how it all began and gave great praise to the dedication of all the volunteers over the years who made this school what it was. Dianne van Vliet presented teach ers with gifts and gave a bit of infor mation about each one. Gloria Wilbee sang, Let There be Love and re-wrote the words of Trust Me Baby, This is Love, to Walton School Remembered with her closing lines. ‘Gather today to say goodbye as Walton School closes its doors. So let’s stand together, join our hearts, feel the pride’. A quartet of Graeme Craig, Gloria Wilbee, Jim Cook and Patty Banks sang. An Irish Blessing accompanied on the piano by Marion Godkin. Alice called Graeme and Neil to come up on stage presenting them with a framed copy of the school pic ture. They in turn presented her with a gift. Alice gave closing remarks mentioning many names that had crossed her path since being here. It was an incredible day thanks to some incredible people. The evening ended with a great display of fire works. PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Patty Banks Coll 887-6156 Congratulations to Brian, Shelley, Brandon and Abby McGavin on the birth of Tyson Reed. There will be a luncheon after church next Sunday and every one will have a chance to meet the new minister. Joan Tuchlinsky and her husband Brian and children. Joan is a diacional minister. Rev. Cole Amal explained that an ordained minister is called to ministry in word (preaching), sacraments and pastoral care. Diacionals are called to edu cate, service and pastoral care. She has been trained in group process and community development. Her sermon was called. Faith in the Power of God. She said ministers are called to be in relationship with the Christian communitv. A pastoral relationship is a covenant relation ship similar to marriage with the qualities of love, respect, equality, openness, forgiveness, commitment which must all be present in order for it to work. We will be faced with the challenge of discovering that the minister is human, with many tal ents, gifts and will have shortcom ings as well. “How will this congregation choose to deal with this?” she asked. She asked if this congregation would choose the fight or flight response in dealing with any prob lem that might come up. Or would they choose to go in faith, knowing that God is with them?
