Area athletes win Madill awards FROM BELGRAVE Family holds reunion The 55th annual Nethery- Leishman reunion was held on Sunday, June 25 at the Community Hall, Londesboro, with 43 signing the register. Guests were present from Calgary, Alberta, Forest, Toronto, Blenheim, Exeter, Clinton, Brussels, Wingham, Blyth, Belgrave and ^surrounding district. Ella Ives of Blyth was in charge of the sports and contests which were enjoyed by all. Following the supper hour Larry Johnston of RR2, Clinton conducted the meeting. He announced the deaths during the past year: Jean Wightman, Betty Nethery, Violet Cooper and Myrtle Barker. A few moments’ silence followed in remembrance. Special prizes were awarded by Larry Johnston to: youngest person present. Amber Siertsema, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Siertsema of RR3, Blyth; oldest person present, Isabel Scanlon of Clinton; person coming the farthest, Cindy Riad of Calgary, Alberta; most recently mar­ ried couple, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Siertsema of RR3, Blyth; birthday nearest June 25, Taylor Nethery of Blenheim; guessing the records from the Guinness Book of Records, Gladys Van Camp of Brussels, guessing the number of candies in a jar, Trevor Nethery of Blenheim. President for next year is Philip Potter of Exeter and secretary-treas­ urer is Mary Isabel Nethery of Belgrave. The reunion closed by singing Auld Lang Syne. School bd. staff recognized for long service Among the 52 Avon Maitland District School Board employees rec­ ognized for long service to the board, 10 local people were congratulated for their contribution. The principals, vice-principals, secretaries, custodians, administra­ tive staff and bus drivers were saluted for more than 25 years service. The local recipients were: Elaine Haney, Walton Public School; Roy Gingerich, Hullett Public School; Ken Lee, East Wawanosh Public School; Stewart Steiss, Grey Central Public School; Thomas Allen and George Sutton, Goderich District Collegiate Institute; Raymond Cardy and Carolyn Schofield, F.E. Madill Secondary School; Joan Pinder, Central Huron Secondary School and Petra Travers, Listowel District Secondary School. Congratulations to Sjaan Gerth who received the Olympian award at F. E. Madill Secondary School’s ath­ letic awards banquet. The award is presented to the stu­ dent athlete who excels in an Olympic sport. Sjaan competed in three different Olympic sports this past season. During his five years in school Gerth competed in 13 different OFSAA championships with this year being the most successful as he was finally able to win a silver medal in the 2000 metre steeplechase. He has also won numerous individual champion-ships at Huron Perth and WOSSA in both cross country and track and field. As well as establishing the six new school records Gerth has also set Huron Perth and WOSSA records. He has competed at the national and international level. During the summer he competes in triathlons, having finished fourth in an international competition last year. He has been a top athlete at the school. Cindy Freiburger shared female athlete of the year. Freiburger has a true love of sport and a determined athlete. Gerth was the most valuable run­ ner on the cross country running team. He also received a leadership award for nordic skiing. Holly Pfeiffer was the most improved player on the badminton team. Justin Black was the most dedicat­ ed member of the wrestling team. Gavin Van Camp was the most dedicated player on the senior boys rugby team. Justin Howatt was the recipient of the rugby team’s DAWG collar award. A total of nine school track and field records were set this year. Gerth set three, new marks in dis­ tance running. Amber Koehler was the most spirited member of the cheerleading squad. The community extends sincere sympathy to the Marks families on the recent loss of E. Isabel Marks, a dear wife, mother and grandmother. Mabel’s Moms met on Wednesday, June 21 for their final meeting until October. Those who attended were Lila Procter and Jessica; Tracey Brohm and Liam; Karen Rundle and Holly; Donna Raynard, Curtis and Craig; Crystal Agombar, Zachary, Nicholas and Curtis Weber; Kim Higgins, Ashley and Shelby. On behalf of the group Lila pre­ sented Mabel with a flowering pot­ ted plant in appreciation for her efforts. All enjoyed a potluck lunch­ eon out on the deck. Alicia Appleby, a Grade 2 student at East Wawanosh Public School, took the opportunity last Thursday to share her writ­ ing with schoolmates during Author’s Day. Smith in Brussels. Belated happy 40 anniversary congratulations to Hans and Gerrie den Dekker who clebrated with fam­ ily, friends and neighbours at a come and go at their new home on the third of Grey. Happy 45th anniversary to Pete and Margaret Van Veen who cele­ brated with a come and go tea at the Cranbrook Community Centre on Sunday, June 25. Sympathy is extended to Cecil and Lou Raynard on the recent passing of Cecil’s sister Doris MacFarlane of Listowel. Hats off to the Grey Twp. fireman and their spouses for a job well done at the firemen’s breakfast held on Sunday morning, June 25. The Ethel ball committee hosted a very succesfull ball tournament this weekend as well. Ethel was a busy place on Saturday and Sunday.
