BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2000. PAGE 17. Linda Moore starts out new path with ‘Stolen Lives’ By Mark Nonkes Freelance Writer Director Linda Moore considers Stolen Lives - The Albert Walker Story sort of a docu-drama. “It can be sort of overwhelming with so many facts.” she said. The two books and articles about the Albert Walker saga are useful Moore said. “It’s good because you can draw on the resources that are available.” When directing Stolen Lives Moore is going to look at it as a play. “I’m not going to get bogged down in what's true and what’s not,” she said in a phone interview. Moore believes people are fascinated by the Albert Walker story. “Walker was thought to be an upstanding citizen ... but really he was living a life of major crime,” she said. Moore is excited to work on a new Peter Colley script. She worked on I'll Be Back Before Midnight, Colley’s best known play, before. Taking on Albert Walker part made Haworth 6woo%y’from all the lying In 1970, Moore started out in theatre at the Shaw Festival as an apprentice. In 1978 Moore got her first directing job. She has worked across Canada and has worked at places such -as the Belfry Theatre in Victoria, B.C, the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, the Grand Theatre in London and the Centaur Theatre in Montreal. Moore has also taught and directed at the National Theatre School in Montreal. Moore worked in Blyth in 1987 on Another Season’s Promise by Anne Chislett and Keith Roulston. This past season was Moore's last as artist director at the Neptune Theatre in Halifax. She held the post for 10 years. “I felt like I made my contribution and it was time to let others make their contribution.” Linda Moore: directs Peter Colley’s new play, Stolen Lives — The Albert Walker Story. / Peter James Haworth After Peter James Haworth workshopped the role of Albert Walker in Stolen Lives - The Albert Walker Story- he did not feel well. “The first time we read the play . . . I sort of felt woozy from all the lying.” Haworth said in Stolen Lives his character lies about 98 per cent of the time. “I think a lot of the time he was having fun and I think that is horrendous.” For the role, Haworth has read internet articles and two books on the Albert Walker saga. Festival has seen 26 seasons of growth Like most people experiencing their 26th summer, the Blyth Festival has grown over the years. That first summer in 1975 there were 16 performances of two plays (plus a benefit performance of The Farm Show). In 2000 there will be 106 performances. That first summer, the Festival operated on a budget of just $10,000. Today the budget has grown to $1.2 million. In 1975 there was no year-round staff and there were two technicians, four paid actors (there were several local volunteers) and one writer/director/dramaturge. That didn’t include James Roy and Anne Chislett who served as artistic director and administrator and drew Haworth said the script flows easily and playwright Peter Colley has done a good job of writing. “There’s enough information for three or four plays and he has managed to put it all into one.” Haworth is excited to come to Blyth for the first time. He has worked with director Linda Moore in Halifax when she was the artistic director of Neptune Theatre. In 1977, Haworth entered the National Theatre School and quit in 1979 when lie was offered work at the Manitoba Theatre Centre. Haworth was recently in the Theatre Aquarius production of Who Has Seen the Wind based on the book by W.O. Mitchell. Haworth has worked with Soulpepper and The Stratford Festival. Over the two decades he has worked in theatre, he has worked on over 50 shows across Canada. Haworth said he loves working in theatre. Haworth’s two children are also involved in theatre but for them it’s about having fun. "They never have to worry about putting food on the table.” Last year, Haworth’s daughter was in the Soulpepper production of Our Town in Toronto. They will be visiting him in Blyth for a week after they are finished summer camp. — MN Over her 10 years as artistic director, Moore directed about -40 shows at the Neptune Theatre. Moore directed the premiere of Dracula, which later was produced at The Stratford Festival, by another director. As well, she directed a special licensed version of Les Mis. When Moore was artistic director the Neptune Theatre was completely renovated, a studio space added and spaces extended. Moore said she continues to be motivated by the work. “You can be motivated by the material, an idea...it depends on what it is,” she said.
