production of Anne, read Anne of
Green Gables at age 10 and now is
reading the book again.
“It’s a really kind of neat book.
It’s very funny too,” she says.
Tweed said the situation of the

“It’s true
anytime.”
Marilla, the character Tweed
portrays, is Anne’s adopted mother.
Tweed said Anne's presence changes
the town of Avonlea.
“She opens Marilla up. She gives
Marilla a chance to love. She makes
everybody look at things slightly
differently.”
In 1974, Tweed came to Blyth for
the first time and rehearsed on the
stage of the then-condemned
Memorial Hall, prior to Theatre
Passe Mauri lie’s tour of 1837: The
Farmers' Revolt to country auction
barns.
Tweed has spent 30 years in
theatre and several summers in Blyth
directing and acting in shows.
“I’m really glad to be back ... it’s
like coming home.”
Tweed was on the Blyth stage last
year as a senior citizen who blows
up Wai-Marts in Big Box.
After Big Box last summer,
Tweed was in a play at the Great
Canadian Stage Company in Ottawa.
During the winter months Tweed
taught theatre arts at the University
of Ottawa. Tweed has taught at the
university for about 25 years.
“Teaching is a joy. But then so is
acting a joy and so is directing a joy.
I like all three.”

Thomas Hauff knows that even
when he finishes a day of rehearsals
for Anne, he will likely see the
director again before the day is done.
The director. Diana Belshaw, and
Hauff have been together for 22
years. However, Hauff and his
partner, keep “shop-talk” minimal at
home.
“The only thing I can do is say
the things I would normally say to a
director in the bar,” Hauff said.
This is the first time
has directed Hauff.
Hauff first appearance
was 1979 and has been
returning since then.
“I like the people, I
plays.”
Hauff smiles as he reveals he and
Belshaw’s daughter, Elenor, was
concieved in Blyth 19-years-ago.
Elenor’s middle name is Blyth.
Hauff was last seen on the Blyth
stage two years ago in Jobs! Jobs!
Jobs! and Yesteryear.

Hauff will be playing Matthew
Cuthbert in Anne and five different
roles in Stolen Lives — The Albert
Walker Story.
Matthew is Anne’s adopted father
and although Matthew is a shy
character he grows to love the red
head.
“Matthew is a faboulous
character. He’s generous, he’s got a
huge heart. He’s a very loving
individual. And it’s great to be able
to play someone like that.”
In Stolen Lives — The Albert
Walker Story Hauff plays all the
older characters.
Hauff takes on the roles of a
detective, landlord, prosecuting
attorney, fisherman and farmer.
Hauff worked with a voice coach
to help him with his “terrible English
accent” for the play.
Before coming to the festival this
year Hauff appeared in “a faboulous
love story” at Theatre New
Brunswick. Hauff credits Belshaw
with helping him with the role.
“She told me that I should really
try to breath and relax in this role
because that is what she wanted me
to do with Matthew.”
