Lea from Huronlea THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21,2000. PAGE 21. One day last week started out with the same greeting: “How are you, Jessie?” And the same answer was received: “Surviving.” But this is not an ordinary morn ing for that day. Jessie Engel had reached the amazing age of 104. Jessie reads her paper each day keeping abreast of all the news. She plays bingo every week, plays euchre occasionally and is aware of all that goes on around her. Sometimes she seems to be amused at the goings on of us 70 - 90-year- olds. What does she think of all this birthday hullabaloo? Well she hates it and she loves it. “I wish it was all < INSTANT FAX A AS F.A.S.T AS PHONE over - I hate publicity!” And then two minutes later, “I should have ordered my cake, 9x13 is right and three dozen shortbreads.” They’re going to take my picture - now that’s plain silly! I hope I look nice.” You can count on Jessie whenever the snow falls, to say, “I hate snow!” On the first day of April, which hap pened to be a gorgeous spring day, I said to Jessie “Look out the window - it’s a snowstorm. She looked and then said “There’s no snow - I hate snow”. I said “April Fool!” She stayed quite for a few seconds and said “Well, you sure got me that time” and then returned to her paper. The Workman chil dren, Craig and his wife Lisa and Peter (accompanied by my favourite dog Kelly) visited Father Workman. Darryl Vanass visited Father Vanass. I am sure all the families in Cranbrook celebrated Father’s Day in their own way. Except... poor old neglected Father Hagedoom. Poor old Father Hagedoom sat on his own in his garret, chomping on a dry crust of bread softened by his tears. His son Adam now is a father in his own right (of the Millennium twins) and had only time to make a phone call. So Adam is out of the Will. The twins by the way are doing well and gaining weight appropriate ly. Benjamin is fat and loves his grub. The main interest in Ben’s life is his food. Evelyn is dainty and interactive. She eats with delicacy, observes the world and smiles when amused. They both are now in the Will. On June 27 Natasha Terpstra cele brates her birthday! Happy Birthday, Natasha! I was asked by Benjamin Fretz, who is my youngest contributor to the news, to report that his father has taught him to “play his armpit”. I think that is a fitting closure to this edition of the Cranbrook News. The work on the Cranbrook Hall, to remodel and prepare the down stairs of the building for use in win ter has now been completed. After removal of the old library walls and after installation of doors, the down stairs is now painted. A new carpet has been installed and decoration brightens up the walls. The euchre parties when they resume in the fall will be held down stairs. It has a ramp and is fully wheelchair accessible. The Hall board wants to thank Frank Workman, John Vanass, John Saxon, Gary Evans, Sheila Terpstra, and Helen Heatherington, all of whom generously donated time and skills and materials towards the completion of this project. The Hall is for rent. As of Aug. 1 rental rates will be $50 for the upstairs hall and $25 for the down stairs hall. There is a fully equipped kitchen.
