The Citizen, 2000-06-21, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2000. From the Minister's Study Being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers By Cathrine Campbell Melville Brussels, Knox Belgrave Presbyterian Churches "Am 1 my brother’s keeper?” (Genesis 4:9b) The whiny humph you can hear in Cain’s voice is both a clue to the right answer and a sound that has echoed throughout the millennia. Cain tries to distance himself from the wrong he has committed by try ing to put the blame on Abel; giving the impression if Abel had been smarter or quicker he would not have died. But Abel did die and because of Cain. This was the most preventa ble death in the history of humanity but pride, malice, anger and self- centredness ensured that Abel would die and Cain would try to .weasel out of his responsibility. Responsibility is a word with many nuances but the most impor tant is an assenting to accept one’s Morning Star to host inaugural Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels, regular meeting was held on Tuesday, June 13 with Vice Grand Sis. Mary Elliott presiding. Past Noble Grand Sis. Lorraine Edwards and Noble Grand Sis. Elva Brown attended Rebekah Assembly of Ontario sessions in London June 12, 13, 14. The inaugural meeting for Huron District #23 will be Thursday, June 22 at 8 p.m. in Brussels. It is hoped there will be a good attendance of Past Noble Grands to show support for the member Sis. Elva Brown who will be District Deputy President for term 2000-2001. Sunday, June 25 the Oddfellows and Rebekahs will be worshipping at Brussels United Church for their annual church service. Several members visited with Sis. Marguerite Crawford who celebrat ed her 95th birthday on May 31. Donation was made to Brussels Agricultural Society. We are to make home, community and country a good and pleasant place to be. Failure to do that means we all suffer. We all suffer when par ents fail and their children (of what ever age) feel it is OK to drive across someone’s lawn. We all suffer when institutions fail and illness strikes young and old causing needless death and suffering. We all suffer when we fail to recognize that right and wrong are just that and choose the wrong because it is expedient, attractive or just seems more com fortable. Self-centredness can seem to be a pleasant thing, perhaps, even a justi fiable state, but the price can be high. Broken relationships, broken dreams and broken promises do not make for a good place to be and the reality emerges that the centredness of self becomes the repudiation of others. From this has come the ills of humanity, war, poverty, slavery, and the death of millions. It is a sad reality that often this state is justified under the heading: “It is good for the economy,” or “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette”, or “What do a bunch of religious nuts know? look at their leader, he never even owned a house!” Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a pointed come back to those who felt the every man/woman for him/her self way was the only way when he said: “We have always known that Father’s Day breakfast Shae McLean and his father Keith of Grey Twp. enjoyed breakfast together when the Brussels Fire Department host ed a breakfast Sunday morning. (First Inaugural Address 1933) Jesus may not have owned a house or a good stock portfolio but he knew the value of each living soul and he tells in the most clear way in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The Samaritan did not review what was the best course of action for himself but what was best for the man lying bleeding in-the ditch. The Samaritan takes responsi bility, he invests his time and his money to bring healing for the man and asks nothing in return. In so doing the Samaritan demon strates, most clearly, that he is his brother or sister’s keeper. He does not beggar himself, he enriches him self with his actions that confirm that he is privileged to be able to give such aid and that he is free to do so. We draw much from this story and the end is one we should all pay close attention to: “Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise”. (Luke 10:37b) For we all are to be our brother’s and sister’s keepers.
