United Church marks 75th PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
Helen Craig, Betty McCall and
Kathleen Williamson were in charge
of the UCW meeting. The room was
decorated with balloons and bows to
mark the 75th anniversary of the
United Church. Marie McGavin
accompanied the singing at the
piano. Kathleen gave a few brief
readings. Betty McCall gave the
scripture readings and Helen read
from the book, “Simple Abundance
... Achieving Balance in our Lives.”
Helen had the topic for the
evening entitled, “Take a look at our
church". She had a book display
from the Mitchell Resource Centre.
Some of the ladies did not know of
its existence and were surprised to
find that one could buy not only
books but videos, pins, napkins, a
calendar, etc.
Helen passed out a Great United
Church Anniversary Quiz for the
ladies to check their knowledge
about the church. No one got 100 per
cent.
It was great to welcome Bonnie
Cole-Arnal back to Duff’s United
Church on Sunday, June 11.

Making a contribution
Usually the first smiling face to greet visitors to Walton
Public School, secretary Jane Zwep was recognized for
her contribution to the school by the teachers federation.
“The Support Person of the Year
Award” goes to Jane Zwep! It was a
very surprised and speechless Jane
who opened the letter from the Avon
Maitland Teacher’s Local last week
and read the letter proclaiming her
support person of the year.
Tina and the staff of WPS
nominated Jane for this award.
Letters of recommendation from
parents were also sent.
She was nominated for the
incredible difference that her
presence makes in the lives of every
student at WPS. They confirm that
her selfless commitment was felt by
everyone and they appreciate the
compliment that she makes to the
safe learning environment of the
school. Jane felt so honoured and
thankful for the award and has
always appreciated the support of
forward then asked for a volunteer to
move the piano outside. None of the
kids thought that they could do it.
But it was decided that if there were
10 or more big strong people to help,
that it could be done. She told them

the staff and parents who help make
her job a little easier and such a
wonderful experience.
Congratulations Jane!
Jane will attend the celebration
dinner, June 21 at the Victorian Inn,
Stratford to receive the award.
The kindergarten class have been
learning about unsafe things to eat.
They learned that such plants as the
buttercup, delphinium, foxglove,
iris, tulip, rhubarb blade, peach
seeds, morning glory, sweet pea,
tomato vines, lily-of-the-valley,
potato sprouts ... and maybe more
are poisonous.
They also looked at different
places where poisonous things could
be found such as under the kitchen
sink (chemicals), the workshop,
medicine cabinet, etc.
The Grade Is took on the roles of
that it was Pentecost Sunday and it
was important to know that with the
help of the Holy Spirit in our lives
we could accomplish a lot of
wonderful things.
Patty Banks, Sunday School
Superintendent after thanking Heidi
McClure, treasurer, Diane VanVIiet,
secretary and Gloria Wilbee for all
their help, handed out certificates
and seals to her class. James and
Nick Durrell and Brandon McGavin
received their three-year seal,
Cassandra Banks received her eight
year seal and Adam McClure picked
up his nine-year seal.
Jim and Marcie Campbell taught
the older kids this year and Jim
handed Jennifer McClure her
twelve-year seal and Mark Wilbee
his eleven-year seal.
Shelley McGavin taught ages
three to five and Ryan Baan,
Mackenzie and Jacob McGavin, and

well known storybook characters,
then worked with a partner to put on
a little skit. They had trolls, goats,
mirrors, wicked queens, pigs,
wolves, bears, Goldilocks, Red
Riding Hood and Jack and giants.
The Grade 4s made props for their
play, the Elves and the Shoemaker.
The staff and children spent a
pleasurable day at African Lion
Safari. Once again parent support
was tremendous as 42 parents
showed up to help with 78 children.
After their tours they left for
Stratford where they ordered meals
from McDonalds and ate them at the
Upper Queen’s Park. Thanks to the
SAC committee that paid for all the
children’s fees for the day, including
their meal.
The kindergarten children made
letter holders for their dads for
Father’s Day. The letter holders
were made from wood, cut by Mr.
Jack Clark. Mr. Clark used a dowel
for the neck and a 2 x 4 block for the
body. The head was a clothespin,
which opens to grab the letters. The
children enjoyed painting them
yellow and decorating with brown
spots and wiggly eyes.
Grade l/2s created personalized
Father’s Day cards. Grade Is made
theirs on a Franklin program on the
computer and Grade 2 made
construction paper cards with
enclosed puzzles. They both worked
very hard stitching bookmark gifts
for their dads with yam in plastic
mesh. There will be no school next
Friday as all students will be visiting
their receiving schools.
The last count for attendance at
the school closing ceremonies was
466 and they are expecting that
number to increase in the next week.
The fun begins at 3 p.m. on June 25,
with children programs including
face painting, soccer and other
games, plus a very special surprise
for the kids at 4 p.m. Beef on a bun
will be served between 5 and 7 p.m.
Everyone is asked to bring a salad of
some kind. Dessert and drinks will
be provided.
There will be a tent and picnic
tables but people are asked to make
sure they bring their lawn chairs. A
program with presentations and
entertainment will begin at 7 p.m.
and run until 9 p.m. There will be a
social time after until it is dark and
then an incredible fireworks show
will take place.
For those who haven’t called with
numbers attending the ceremonies
please do as soon as possible.

Metropolis of Walton last Saturday.
There were people everywhere
looking for some great deals. From
crafts, to baby ducks to foot-long

found that day. It was kind of nice
seeing the town so busy. Hey, let's
do this every Saturday. What do you
think?
There was also the Craig family
reunion held at the Walton Hall later
that day. On that same day
Hemingways held their 53rd family
reunion at the home of Ron Godkin
in Exeter. There were 75 in
attendance with the youngest being
eight months and the oldest being
88 years. Family came from B.C.,

desserts.
After the meal Margery Huether

to her a poem that she had composed
telling of the good times that they all
had over the years. Phyllis, saying
what a great friend and neighbour
Betty had always been, wished her
well and presented her with a lovely
necklace and gift certificate to the
Merry Piper Restaurant.
Betty thanked everyone for the
gifts and pleasant surprise and was
glad to be close by to visit with
everyone. It was a great night that
went on- until the twilight hours.
