United Church marks 75th PEOPLE AROUND WALTON Helen Craig, Betty McCall and Kathleen Williamson were in charge of the UCW meeting. The room was decorated with balloons and bows to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Church. Marie McGavin accompanied the singing at the piano. Kathleen gave a few brief readings. Betty McCall gave the scripture readings and Helen read from the book, “Simple Abundance ... Achieving Balance in our Lives.” Helen had the topic for the evening entitled, “Take a look at our church". She had a book display from the Mitchell Resource Centre. Some of the ladies did not know of its existence and were surprised to find that one could buy not only books but videos, pins, napkins, a calendar, etc. Helen passed out a Great United Church Anniversary Quiz for the ladies to check their knowledge about the church. No one got 100 per cent. It was great to welcome Bonnie Cole-Arnal back to Duff’s United Church on Sunday, June 11. She called the young worshippers Walton’s J, Zwep earns award Making a contribution Usually the first smiling face to greet visitors to Walton Public School, secretary Jane Zwep was recognized for her contribution to the school by the teachers federation. “The Support Person of the Year Award” goes to Jane Zwep! It was a very surprised and speechless Jane who opened the letter from the Avon Maitland Teacher’s Local last week and read the letter proclaiming her support person of the year. Tina and the staff of WPS nominated Jane for this award. Letters of recommendation from parents were also sent. She was nominated for the incredible difference that her presence makes in the lives of every student at WPS. They confirm that her selfless commitment was felt by everyone and they appreciate the compliment that she makes to the safe learning environment of the school. Jane felt so honoured and thankful for the award and has always appreciated the support of forward then asked for a volunteer to move the piano outside. None of the kids thought that they could do it. But it was decided that if there were 10 or more big strong people to help, that it could be done. She told them FROM WALTON the staff and parents who help make her job a little easier and such a wonderful experience. Congratulations Jane! Jane will attend the celebration dinner, June 21 at the Victorian Inn, Stratford to receive the award. The kindergarten class have been learning about unsafe things to eat. They learned that such plants as the buttercup, delphinium, foxglove, iris, tulip, rhubarb blade, peach seeds, morning glory, sweet pea, tomato vines, lily-of-the-valley, potato sprouts ... and maybe more are poisonous. They also looked at different places where poisonous things could be found such as under the kitchen sink (chemicals), the workshop, medicine cabinet, etc. The Grade Is took on the roles of that it was Pentecost Sunday and it was important to know that with the help of the Holy Spirit in our lives we could accomplish a lot of wonderful things. Patty Banks, Sunday School Superintendent after thanking Heidi McClure, treasurer, Diane VanVIiet, secretary and Gloria Wilbee for all their help, handed out certificates and seals to her class. James and Nick Durrell and Brandon McGavin received their three-year seal, Cassandra Banks received her eight­ year seal and Adam McClure picked up his nine-year seal. Jim and Marcie Campbell taught the older kids this year and Jim handed Jennifer McClure her twelve-year seal and Mark Wilbee his eleven-year seal. Shelley McGavin taught ages three to five and Ryan Baan, Mackenzie and Jacob McGavin, and Abby McGavin all received their first-year seal. All children who attended Sunday School for half of the year were eligible for a seal. Congratulations kids! well known storybook characters, then worked with a partner to put on a little skit. They had trolls, goats, mirrors, wicked queens, pigs, wolves, bears, Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood and Jack and giants. The Grade 4s made props for their play, the Elves and the Shoemaker. The staff and children spent a pleasurable day at African Lion Safari. Once again parent support was tremendous as 42 parents showed up to help with 78 children. After their tours they left for Stratford where they ordered meals from McDonalds and ate them at the Upper Queen’s Park. Thanks to the SAC committee that paid for all the children’s fees for the day, including their meal. The kindergarten children made letter holders for their dads for Father’s Day. The letter holders were made from wood, cut by Mr. Jack Clark. Mr. Clark used a dowel for the neck and a 2 x 4 block for the body. The head was a clothespin, which opens to grab the letters. The children enjoyed painting them yellow and decorating with brown spots and wiggly eyes. Grade l/2s created personalized Father’s Day cards. Grade Is made theirs on a Franklin program on the computer and Grade 2 made construction paper cards with enclosed puzzles. They both worked very hard stitching bookmark gifts for their dads with yam in plastic mesh. There will be no school next Friday as all students will be visiting their receiving schools. The last count for attendance at the school closing ceremonies was 466 and they are expecting that number to increase in the next week. The fun begins at 3 p.m. on June 25, with children programs including face painting, soccer and other games, plus a very special surprise for the kids at 4 p.m. Beef on a bun will be served between 5 and 7 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a salad of some kind. Dessert and drinks will be provided. There will be a tent and picnic tables but people are asked to make sure they bring their lawn chairs. A program with presentations and entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. There will be a social time after until it is dark and then an incredible fireworks show will take place. For those who haven’t called with numbers attending the ceremonies please do as soon as possible. By Patty Banks Call 887-6156 Visiting with the Baan families in Walton were John and Dave’s cousins from Oud-Albles, Holland, Jan Jongeneel and his two sons. While here they, along with family, friends and neighbours, helped Dave and Diane Baan celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on June 11. Congratulations to Trisha McClure who woti the Bill Pinder award for midget girls and for the most improved female athlete. The Athletic Association awards night was held last Wednesday at Seaforth District High School. Receiving the award for the most improved basketball player for the midget boys was Geoff Banks. Shane McClure Neighbours say goodbye It was 53 years ago when Betty McCall was brought to the farm on the ninth concession as a bride. She has been very busy ever since being involved in the Walton community as a UCW member, a WI member, an active member of Duff’s United and at one time wrote the Walton News for The Citizen. Betty just recently moved from the farm to Maple Villa apartments in Brussels. On Saturday, June 17, 60 neighbours and friends gathered at Phyllis and Emerson Mitchell’s to honour Betty. She was treated to a pork chop barbecue cooked by Gordon Mitchell and B & B friend Ian McMillan of St. Catharines. The Morris considers bylaws Morris Twp. councillors reviewed bylaws at the June 6 meeting. A zoning amendment for George (Ted) Cowan for the north part of Lot 27, Cone. 4 to change the zoning to agricultural small hold-special provisions was passed. The provision restricts the existing bam to three animal units and states that the buildings comply with appropriate setbacks for the AG4 zoning. -A bylaw to set the revenues for the budget at $2,211,249 was passed by council. Approval was given for a consent application from Ross and Barb Nichol of Lot 26, Cone. 6. The only condition on the creation of a new lot is that it be squared to the road and if possible, smaller to the east and west. Graduation Carrie Ansley graduated with honours in North Bay as a Dental Hygienist. She took a position in Coquitlam B.C. Congratulations and Best Wishes. Love, Dad, Mom, Kevin, Mike & Dave won the most dedicated award in track. There will be a bridal shower for Lori McClure at Walton church on July 12. Well, it was-a very big day for the Metropolis of Walton last Saturday. There were people everywhere looking for some great deals. From crafts, to baby ducks to foot-long hotdogs, you name it, it could be found that day. It was kind of nice seeing the town so busy. Hey, let's do this every Saturday. What do you think? There was also the Craig family reunion held at the Walton Hall later that day. On that same day Hemingways held their 53rd family reunion at the home of Ron Godkin in Exeter. There were 75 in attendance with the youngest being eight months and the oldest being 88 years. Family came from B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, various places in Ontario, Indiana, Texas and England. Pearl and Harold McCallum have friends from England here until Wednesday. meal was topped off with potluck desserts. After the meal Margery Huether called Betty up to the front and read to her a poem that she had composed telling of the good times that they all had over the years. Phyllis, saying what a great friend and neighbour Betty had always been, wished her well and presented her with a lovely necklace and gift certificate to the Merry Piper Restaurant. Betty thanked everyone for the gifts and pleasant surprise and was glad to be close by to visit with everyone. It was a great night that went on- until the twilight hours. (Betty has a copy of the poem if you want it, 887-8223 Council will bring the landfill agreement before council on June 20 for discussion before presenting it to Brussels council. Road Superintendent Lloyd Michie will be presenting a report on water conditions in the township for the next session. Approval was given for a contribution of $250 to the economic development committee for a seminar for new businesses. Graduation On June 14, 2000, Kathy Fraser, daughter of Randy and Lorna Fraser graduated from Fanshawe College. Kathy graduated from the Architectural Technology Division. She will receive the Architectural Technology Merit Award this fall. Kathy is employed at Watford Roof & Truss Company in Watford, Ont. as a design technician.
