Church of God buys former restaurant WMS talks of faith Melville move on the part of a few families,” says Marion. Rev. Glen Beach helped with the construction and was there for the first service in January. “The building worked well in the beginning,” said Marion. Over the years the church saw a number of ministers come and go, including a stretch of five years that almost brought things to an end in 1985. “There was only one family left, us, and we were not able to operate legally,” says Marion. A board was established and a lay minister, Emil Sonenberg from Kitchener-Waterloo and Pastor Art and his wife Evelyn Krueger of Owen Sound agreed to take on min isterial duties. They stayed for almost a year. From then the congregation con tinued to thrive with about 20 fami lies involved in the church and a reg ular Sunday attendance of 45. The quaint church with its limited park ing and space was becoming less practical, however. The congregation began contem plating an addition to the existing church. However, this would not help the parking situation. When current pastor Les Cook heard that the vacant restaurant was for sale he approached the congrega tion with the idea of purchasing it. “There was 100 per cent approval,” says Marion, “which was very encouraging.” With money borrowed from the Church of God’s Revolving Loan Fund, Blyth congregation will take over the building in September. However, as some changes must be made to the interior they will be leas ing it until the closing date. Plans include a basement kitchen and meeting room with the sanctuary and an adjacent nursery proposed for upstairs. “It’s exciting to look back and see how God was always there guiding us and helping us,” says Marion. Glad to be here Marion and Russell Cook, who have been among the worshippers at Blyth Community Church of God since the beginning stand before the congregation’s future. It’s history in the village dates back to earlier that same year when three families with a pastor from Grand Bend began holding cottage prayer meetings in homes. The Cooks were invited to one of those and have been involved ever since.
