Sports Lucknow nips Mosquitoes It was a high-scoring soccer match when Lucknow Optimists chal­ lenged the Blyth Lightning Mosquitoes, June 8. Darcey Cook struck first with assists by Jenna Rinn and Amanda Bearss. Jessica Wheeler displayed great form and made a high kick to beat the surprised Lucknow goalie. Assists went to Jacob Rouw and Britt Cook. Lucknow scored to narrow the gap to one. D. Cook struck for the Lightning again, picking up,the ball on.a nice feed from Lisa Carter and Brittany Peters. Charlotte Worsell took a pass from Carter and Wheeler and slid the ball past the netminder. The Lightning was up 4-1 when Brett Bean added one more on a high kick set up by D. Cook and Rouw. Lucknow retaliated in the second half, notching three unanswered goals on a surprised home team. “Hats off to the Lucknow team who never gave up and almost bat­ tled back into the game,” said Coach Steve Cook. “Our team just ran out of gas towards the end, but showed a lot of grit hanging on for the victo­ ry” <7-9 squad shutout The Brussels U-9 1 squad saw their record fall to 1-2 when they met Listowel 5 on their home field, June 5. In spite of .good efforts by Jordan Roberts and Andrew Lindsay who shared netminding duties, the home team was shut out in the 5-0 loss. Cameron Wood showed enthusi­ asm, taking two kicks off the chest and two off the head. Randy Zwep was good on defence while Danica Zwep’s clearing shots helped turn the attackers away. Annamieka Kerkhof and Thomas Johnston worked hard in centre field. Let ’er go Bowlers were ready for competition last Thursday as the Brussels greens hosted the first tournament of the season. (Vicky Bremner photo) Bowlers play in tourney Brussels Lawn Bowling Club held its first tournament of the year, Thursday, June 8 with 24 bowlers participating. The tournament was sponsored jointly by J. L McCutcheon Motors Ltd. and the CIBC. Winners were: first, Jack Broughton and Delphine Dewar, Atwood, three wins, 47 plus one; second, George Cantelon and Marg Gruber, Clinton; third, Allan Gledhill and Sheila Long, Stratford; fourth. Jack and Marie Muir, Seaforth; fifth, Jack and Audrey MacDonald, Lucknow; sixth, Gordon Bosman and Yvonne Knight, Brussels; consolation, Bob and Audrey McKinley, Clinton. The next tournament to be hosted by the Brussels greens will be July 8. 1-6 teams meet in soccer action When the Brussels U-6 I met Team III June 7 the first goal was scored by Ryan Sholdice centre for Team I when he made his way through the opposing players to score unassisted. Derek Wood of Team III scored the first of his four goals. Jesse Rapson took the ball from the centre kick to score the second goal for Team I. Shea McLean followed with the third goal. Wood stole the ball away from Team I to score his second goal, then scored again after half time to tie the game at 3-3. Wood scored his fourth on the open side of the net. McLean scored his second goal to again tie the game at 4-4. The play went back and forth until McLean split the defence to score again. Shortly after he got his fourth, the final one of the game, to make the score 6-4 for Team I. Tigers record boasts 2 wins, zero losses The Brussels Tigers improved their record to 2-0 with a 6-5 home win over the Goderich Orioles. The O’s opened the scoring in the first with a single run off Tigers’ starter Shawn Conley to lead l-0. The Tigers knotted the score in the second inning and looked to have the game well in hand by plating four more runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Goderich rallied with four in the seventh to tie the game and force the Tigers to win it in their last turn at- bat. After an intentional walk to Doug Conley to load the bases with none out, Gary Pipe ripped a single to left to score Pete Exel who had led off the inning with a double. The Tigers are at home for two games this week.
