FROM BRUSSELS 9-1-1 slowpokes frustrate clerk By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Clerk-Treasurer Donna White expressed frustration at the June meeting of council over the number of people who still didn’t have their house numbers in place in readiness for 9-1-1. “I’m really disappointed they’re not co-operating. They’re playing with their own lives.” Though it was noted that some may have ordered their numbers and were still waiting for them, White said it was a situtation the village would have to continue to monitor. In addition to it being a fineable offense, White stressed the greater price. “If people don’t want to pay $ 10 to get the numbers up when the ambu lance can’t find them they’ll have wished they did.” Council accepts Treating the volunteers Graeme Craig, back right, and Doris Fischer enjoyed the delicious offerings at Huronlea in Brussels, June 6, as the residents hosts a volunteer tea. Serving the treats were staff members Tim Collyer and Steve Cook. Lee from Huronlea Residents thank their volunteers By Lee Chesterfield A famous English poet named Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote, “How do I love thee? Shall I count the ways?” To paraphrase Mrs. Browning we could say, “How can we thank you? Can we count the ways?” and of course we can’t - we can’t count that high'. Some of the activities the Huronlea volunteers participate in are: Bible study, chaplain visits, cooking, baking, staying fit exercis es. They help with special events like Mother’s Day, Victorian Teas and of course the Christmas and Easter festivities. Other volunteers come to entertain us with music, dancing, pet therapy. You name it - they're here! The auxiliary plants the garden and a beautiful quilt was made which will be raffled off in September. If any activities were overlooked it was not intentional. Drivers help with “Dining Out” and other events that require travel ling. And how could, we forget “Buddies R Us”? Brussels Public School’s Grade 4 class visits us every month of the school year. We play games, answer questions and listen to their wonderful stories. These boys and girls who are start ing out in life have a close affinity to those who are living out their days. The youngsters will remember their visits to Huronlea and they will, in all probability, be the volunteers of tomorrow. So to each and every one of you, our heartfelt thanks. You brighten up our days and our lives. A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Well, June is busting out all over - with parties and gatherings and sales and dinners. It’s been another busy week. The birthday girls had a good time. Agnes Ten Pas celebrated 60 with decorations around her abode and then felt the need to share these treasures when her party was past. Bev Brown celebrated 70 by inviting friends from her past to mingle with her present friends. It was a great party to celebrate friendships and the importance in our lives. The Cardiff crew did their usual good work added to that, were desserts galore. Lions to give playground equipment By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Henry Exel, Orepresenting the Brussels Lions Club, attended the June meeting of council to ask per mission for the club to replace the playground equipment at the park. The Lions had installed the existing equipment 18 years ago. Council approved the $20,000 project with thanks. Council also passed a motion to pay the energy costs on a new light for the south end of the pool, which will be purchased by the Lions. r Its Fathers bay! a 1. Brussels Country Inn call 519-887-9035 for info Terrific party Bev, thanks. Sad news from Cambridge. Our friend John Robson died. Several area friends attended the visitation and funeral to pay respect to a good man. If you’re a farmer at heart get a ticket for Death of The Hired Man at Blyth Theatre. It’s a good way to recall the days of the threshing gang and all that entailed. It's an exciting preview of the 2000 season. Don't forget the blood donor clin ic June 20 at the arena. Your gift of life is always needed. Bye now, Betty G. W.
