Trainer Charlie Scott-Field who has previously been in the area for coaches’ clinics showed young players tips on how to improve their game. (Vicky Bremner photo) Thunder downs Goderich The Bly th PeeWee Ils soccer team have the first three games under their belt. The first game was at home against Wingham Aqua. Greg Bechtel opened the scoring with a nice head ball on the cross-over from Steven Van Amersfoort with Allen Storey and Dawn Dolmage assisting. Tonya Drost beat the keeper for the second goal with the setup going to Bechtel and Nicole Bailie. Melissa Black assisted on Lee Prescott’s goal to put Blyth up 3-0. Wingham got their lone goal late in the game to give Blyth the 3-1 win. Game two was also at home against Wingham Green. Blyth went up by two with the first by Van Amersfoort after Brad Bouman took the throw-in and Drost headed to Van Amersfoort. Bouman and Megan Campbell went to work to set up Bechtel for goal number two. Wingham came back to close the gap to 2-1 early in the second half. Blyth again got a two-goal lead after Bechtel fed Van Amersfoort at the 18-yard line for the third goal. Wingham again came back to make the final 3-2 in favour of Blyth. An out of town game hosted by Clinton Cheetahs entertained the Blyth squad. Bechtel opened the scoring with good foot work from Justin Peters and Campbell. The sec­ ond of the night for Bechtel came when Van Amersfoort took a nice comer kick to set up Bechtel who headed it into the net. Storey, Black and Michelle Cook maneuvered the ball to give Bechtel the hattrick and a 3-1 victory. Keeper duties were shared by a number of players - Prescott, Peters, Bouman and Van Amersfoort. Coach Herb Van Amersfoort said, “They played very well in all areas of the field with good passing skills and good sportsmanship. Well done team.” Team members are: Nicole Bailie, Dawn Dolmage, Tonya Drost, Greg Bechtel, Melissa Black, Brad Bouman, Meagan Campbell, Michelle Cook, Dane Corneil, Justin Peters, Lee Prescott, Allen Storey, Erika Sturzenegger, Steven Van Amersfoort and Kyle Irving. The next home game is Clinton at Blyth on June 7. U-9s lose to Newton Newton 2 was a strong opponent for the Brussels U-9 1 soccer squad as speed helped push the home team to victory, May 29. Though Brussels scored first on a solo effort by Trevor Wood, Brussels would soon be outkicked. In spite of good offensive play by Gavin Bowers and Thomas Johnston and defence by Randy Zwep and Andrew Lindsay, they ended the first half down 2-1. Newton blew the game open in the second half tallying five to Brussels’ one. Lukas Biesinger made some nice grabs in net, but couldn’t hold off the attackers. Brussels scored their second when Lindsay took a pass from Bowers and Danica Zwep. The Blyth “Thunder” Mosquito soccer team has four games behind them with two wins and two losses. On May 12 the team lost to Blyth Lightning with a score of 5-3. On May 18, the team hosted Goderich Tim Horton’s. Daniel DePatie scored early on a pass from Hailey Hulzebos. Duanne Buffinga scored the second Blyth goal off a free kick and stretched the lead to three with a goal by Darren Bouman assisted by DePatie and Jeff Elliott. Lauren Bouman scored Blyth’s fourth goal assisted by DePatie. Goderich scored their only goal on a free kick late in the game. The final score was 4-1 for the Blyth team. On May 25, Wingham Hunter Green came to Blyth. The home team scored first with a goal by DePatie, assisted by Hulzebos and Kerissa Van Amersfoort. Sean Bechtel scored Blyth’s second goal unassisted. Wingham came back with two quick goals to even the score. Blyth then regained the lead with a goal by Bechtel, assisted by Darren Bouman. Early in the second half, Josh DeGans scored on a pass from DePatie. After Wingham scored their third goal, Blyth got three more, one by Bechtel and two by Duanne Buffinga. Assists went to DePatie, Bouman, Kaitlyn Toll and Van Amersfoort. The final score was 7-3 for Blyth. June 1, Blyth travelled to Clinton to play the Cheetahs. The play was back and forth, but Clinton came out on top with a 2-1 win. Blyth’s lone goal was scored by Jeff Elliott with Buffinga getting the assist. Players for the Blyth team are: Kaitlyn Toll, Hailey Hulzebos, Daniel DePatie, Lauren and Darren Bouman, Donnie and Jennifer Williamson, Josh De Gans, Jeff Elliott, Rebecca Schultz, Angie Fraser, Sean Bechtel, Shanta Alexander, Kerissa Van Amersfoort, Skye Cook and Duanne Buffinga.
