FROM BLYTH - On Friday, June 2 47 diners enjoyed the monthly meal hosted by Town and Country Homemakers at Trinity Anglican Church. Special guest was Jean Young, the director for the Homemakers. Susan Armstrong, co-ordinator, read a poem. A meal of beef Stroganoff, mashed potatoes, asparagus, green and yel low beans, a layered salad and dinner rolls was served. This was topped off with delicious rhubarb crisp with ice cream. Three students assisted, Melissa Black, Alisha Marshall, and Scott Armstrong. Susan’s youngest son did ah excellent job helping with the meal. A special welcome went out to Jean Nethery and Elsie Walsh of Blyth. Also attending was Anna Lowey, Margaret Radford (formally from Blyth) and Charlene Foxton of the Seaforth Manor Nursing Home. This month Janet Lawrie was the winner of the 50/50 draw, while Marian Haggitt of Auburn was the recipient of the door prize. June birthdays were Margaret Radford and Dorothy Daer. The guest speaker was Paul Steckle, Federal Member of Parliament for Huron and Bruce. Paul had previous ly been on the board for Town and Throwing the game It was a great day for Blyth Lions and their supporters on Saturday for their horseshoe tourna ment. The fundraising day ended with a pork chop barbecue in the park. (Vicky Bremner photo) Country Homemakers. He thanked the students for being involved and stressed that down the road they would realize just how important volunteer work is. He then spoke on the tragedy in Walkerton. Also he spoke of the event earlier this week where a war veteran’s cof fin was returned from overseas to Ottawa. Steckle talked about his role in Parliament. Politicians are expected to be wherever needed. Of course, events often clash, so it is then a mat ter of priority. Sometimes it is a case of the loca tion - if he had previously been there for another event, then the area where he has not been for some time is where he goes. Resolutions are to create laws for something specific. Two that recent ly came up concerned animal rights and same sex benefits. Although the Liberals voted in favour of equal rights for same sex couples, Paul stood his ground and opposed it. He also talked about firearms, stressing that safety is the important element. Gun use for the wrong rea son is similar to a locked door: it only keeps an honest person out. Not all problems are for the feder al government to deal with. Sometimes it lies in the hands of the provine, county or municipalities He spoke about Blyth, specifically the hockey teams which have cap tured the All-Ontario title over the past three years. Jack Riddell was here on Paul’s behalf earlier this year. Also, he said, the topic of Blyth Theatre’s success has been noted in Ottawa. The next Diners’ meal and enter tainment will be on July 7. On June l, Blyth Legion, Brapch 420 made the raffle draw. The win ner is Don Elliott, the new owner of a 27" Zenith television. Congratulations Don!
