Rejoicing, theme of Presbyterial’s spring rally Rejoicing in Service was the theme for the Spring Rally of the Maitland Presbyterial held in the Lucknow Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 15. The evening programme began with a lively sing-song led by Norma and Marian Raynard. Presbyterial President Shirley McCall and Rev. Peggy Kinsman welcomed all. Following open worship, several items of business were dealt with. Everyone was reminded of the Children’s Rally to be held June 7 at Camp Kintaii. Each group has been assigned responsibilities. Three delegates reported on the Gently Members of the Golden Oldies entertained at St. John’s Anglican Church, Brussels on Sunday afternoon. Magician Percy Way had nothing up his sleeve, perhaps but undercover no one knew. The groups began about 10 years ago as a Tuesday get-together and after someone heard them entertaining suggested they share their talents with others. This was their second trip to Brussels, having performed at the church last year. (Vicky Bremner photo) synodical held in Chatham April 25- 26. Lindsey Raymond shared special music by playing her flute. Two hon orary memberships were presented to Muriel Neilson and Margaret Underwood by the Gorrie WMS. Agnes Bregman introduced the guest speaker Dr. Clarence McMullen. Born in India, Dr. McMullen was educated in India and Canada. He is married to Catherine a Canadian nurse and they have a grown family. For the past 30 years he has served as director of the Christian Institute of Religious Studies in Punjab India. The College has over 1,200 students mostly Sikhs and Hindus with about 12 per cent Christian. Dr. McMullen has taught sociolo gy and helped with the college administration. Like other mission aries, he has served in a partnership capacity representing the Presbyterian Church in Canada. His work includes research in the reli gious situation in the Punjab, pro moting inter-faith dialogue and chal lenging Christians to understand their faith better in order to share it more fully with others. He has authored several books and articles on the religions found in India. Currently he is working on a programme which relates the gospel to the struggles and aspirations of the Christians from the Dalit back ground. The term dalit refers to peo ple who were systematically exploit ed, deprived, oppressed and dehu manized under the caste system and still face severe discrimination. Dr. McMullen spoke about the his tory of the Christian missionary efforts in India, pointing out that early missionary work was largely unsuccessful because it was directed to the upper classes, those who were well-off. Later work was directed towards the very lowest people of Indian society, those isolated and culturally shunned. These efforts were much more successful as the lowest members of society came to know God’s love for them through the provision of health care, housing you are “Welcome at the BLYTH COMMUNITY CHURCH OF GOD 9:45 a.m. - Sunday School for Children and Adults 11:00 a.m. - Morning Worship Bible Studies - Wednesday 10 a.m. & 7:30 p.m. Phone 523-4590 McConnell St., Blyth BRUSSELS - ETHEL PASTORAL CHARGE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Joan Golden - Supply Minister Church Office 887-6259 E-mail - bepc@wcl.on.ca June 4 Ethel United Church 9:30 a.m. Brussels United Church 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to come and worship with us and education.
