We have greatly appreciated all that

It was Rural Life Sunday at Blyth
United Church on May 7. Greeters
were Steve and Debbie Cook. Ushers
were Brent and Lori Brooks, Laurie
Falconer and Wayne Wheeler. Barb
Bosman was organist. Debbie Root
was in charge of the nursery.
Laura Meier read the New
Testament lesson, Acts 3: 11-20, 25-
26.
During the children’s time the
presentation was made of the atten
dance banners. The gold banner went
to the Grade 4 and 5 class. The Pre-
School/JK class received the silver
banner and the bronze banner went
to the Grade 2 and 3 class.
The sermon was the Blessing for
the Distressed (including farmers).
Rev. Ernest Dow told the congrega
tion “that the path to blessing begins
with a cry for relief.”
He polled some local farmers to
identify stresses. They mentioned
finances (more people are working
off the farm to subsidize farming
income), time and pressure to make

Farmers are faced with fluctuating
commodity prices and constantly ris
ing input costs, he said. Rev. Dow
told how “between 1985 and 1995
farm produce prices rose eight per
cent, but input prices rose 22 per
cent.”
As retail prices have risen the
farmer’s share has not increased at
the same rate, in some cases their
share has decreased. Rev. Dow used
the example of pork chops.
“Between 1977 and 1998, the cost of
retail pork chops about doubled from
$4.45 to $8.76 per kg. At the end of
that period the farmer was receiving
22 cents less than two decades earli
er.”
Rev. Dow told the congregation
how the path to blessing is to turn to
God and away from “affluence,
machinery and fussy standards.”
Rev. Dow’s final point was that
“we must be able to recognize real
blessing when it comes. We need to
be aware of God’s presence.”
