Home & Garden 2000 Roof windows welcome fresh air, light Brightening up Sunlight add warming daylight to any room. You’ve spent the winter months pondering the countless home improvement projects you would undertake once the snow thawed and flowers began to bloom. Now it’s finally time for you to take action. One of the best improvements you can make this spring season is to bring more sunlight into your home with roof windows and skylights. According to Terry Blondin, mar keting co-ordinator for roof window and skylight company - bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, family rooms, playrooms, and even closets, garages and porches are just some examples of where these architectural elements can provide natural light and ventila tion to open up and brighten a room. “These days, roof windows and skylights are being used in many cre ative ways, particularly where space is limited and light, or ventilation is essential,” added Blondin. Daylight is so essential that it can have a direct effect on how we feel. People’s sense of time and direction depends on the availability of direct sunlight. Studies have proved that daylight can also play a role in phys- Eye structure impacts appearance of colour ical and mental well-being by reliev ing stress levels and helping the body produce vitamin D and absorb calcium - both crucial factors in maintaining healthy bones. There are a number of things to consider when deciding whether or not roof windows and skylights are the best choice for your home. Blondin offers these key pointers: • Consider carefully how the room is used. “Roof windows and sky lights add light, yet are able to maintain privacy in most applica tions. By bringing natural light to bathrooms, hallways and closets you open up these areas and lessen the need of artificial lighting,” said Blondin. Also, additional fresh air can be gained by operating roof windows in addition to vertical windows. • Quality is critical. When you install a skylight or roof window in your home, it’s natural to be con cerned about leakage and conden sation. To best avoid problems, Blondin recommends to choose quality skylight products with high- performance, Low-E glass backed by a quality and service guarantee. • Also, proper installation of a high- quality skylight can minimize any concerns about leakage and ensure long-term product performance. “Leaky skylights usually mean poor installation,” said Blondin. “In addition to guaranteeing years of problem-free use of our products and weathertightness of our sky lights, we offer videos and instruc tions to make installation even eas ier.” It’s Dirty Work and we do it all.... • Bulldozing • Excavating • Septic Systems • Top Soil • Trucking • Gravel, Sand and Stone Nesbitt Construction 482-3232 ■ ■ The structure of the eye influences how colours appear. For instance, warm colours, such as red, tend to advance in our sight, because red light rays focus on the back of our eye. This makes the colour appear to move forward. Cool colours, such as blue, are focused on the front of the eye, giv ing the illusion of a receding colour. Greens are focused by the centre of the eye and are therefore easier to interpret. If you have ever wondered why green is considered the colour of concentration, that is why. The eye and hence the brain don’t have to work too hard to interpret the colour, so more energy can go into the task at hand, rather than the colour on the wall. Darker colours seem heavier than lighter tints, because deep colours absorb more light, instead of reflect ing the colour back to our eyes. So, colour choices have a lot more to do with the value and contrast of the colour rather than the colour itself. Be sure to study all character istics of a colour in relation to other colours, not as an isolated colour. - News Canada 2-tone decks in fashion It is the latest look for backyard decks across Canada. Two-toning gives decks a creative and distinc tive look that adds flare. Choose colours that complement the house. Don’t feel they have to match exact ly, use colours that add drama. A cream-coloured house and red wood deck with tan railings and steps can be very striking. Or, spice up a tan home with olive and white two-tone deck look. Try clear finishes on floorboards and a coloured stain on accents if you like a more natural look. Use premium stains that won’t fade in a few months. 1 We Do Not Telephone Solicit — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — USE TJHHIS EOE.00 i 1 C% OFF1 , CARPET CLEANING IJL OVER $75.00!
