Home & Garden 2000 Luscious lawns require 55^^ A’’ 2 Tv* plenty of water Front yard beauty .A great looking lawn can add to the attractiveness of the home. With the arrival of spring, your lawn can present you with some unwelcome surprises. But before we look for trouble, let’s consider the easiest way to avoid it. It’s lawn watering, and it’s the single most important thing you can do to promote healthy lawn growth. However, there are a couple of important things to know about effective lawn watering. To begin with, it’s important to remember that grass roots require different watering methods at different stages of their development. For example, because the shallow roots of new grass or sodded lawns dry out more quickly than estab lished lawns, they need frequent watering to remain healthy. That’s why you should be sure to water in small amounts every day. For an established lawn, you Learning tips for paint colours should thoroughly water once a week, applying a full inch of water. This will assure that its deep roots get the water they need, to protect your lawn from extended dry spell damage. (Here’s a handy tip: set out an empty can to gauge your watering depth.) Weeds and insects can be a major problem too - but that’s a subject for another column. Let’s assume that you’ve already got those problems under control, but you’re left with unsightly bare patches that must be re-seeded. The first step is to apply a good quality seed. Seed patches should then be covered with an inch or so of specially formulated soil amendment to hold moisture and add valuable organic material to the soil. It’s also important to remember that seed planted too early could well become an extra food supply for the local bird population. A quality phosphate-based starter fertilizer will assure that your newly germi nated plants awaken to a healthy breakfast that will stimulate root growth and get the patch off to a strong start. When the newly seeded patch reaches the height of surrounding grass, it’s time to treat it like an adult - with an application of a top quality slow-release nitrogen feeder prod uct. Paint always drys to a darker colour than when it is wet. • Back away from the wall...don’t hold a small paint chip against the wall to be painted because the colour behind the chip influences its appearance.. • Now you see it, now you don’t ... to make an object such as an unsightly air vent disappear paint it the same or similar colour as the wall or ceiling behind it. To make an object such as crown molding stand out paint it in a contrasting colour to the surface against which it is placed. • A Step Up....if you are fearful of applying a colour that might be too dark overall then select the same colour one shade above or higher, on the sample chip strip. This way you will maintain the depth of colour, but without as much intensity. • Grey Expectations......to create a more subdued or sophisticated colour tone, select a colour that is more gray-based or toned with black. This helps to lower the bright ness of the colour, so that it feels more subtle but doesn’t lack depth. • Patience for paint......before you rush to a conclusion about the paint colour you have applied to the wall, remember that latex paint can take anywhere from 14 to 28 days to fully cure. Only at this point will you real ly know the true paint colour and sheen. - News Canada • Galvanized Aircraft Cable 1/16" to 3/8” • Wire Rope 3/8" to 3/4" • Stainleaa Steel Cable 1/16" to 1/4" • PVC 4 Clearcoated Cable 1/8" to 3/16" LARGE SELECTION OF INSTOCK WALLPAPER I [ideal] paints Rope... • Polypropylene - t/4" to t/2" • Nylon - 1/4", 1/2", 5/8", 1" • Hemp - 1/2", 3/4", 7/8", 1" Chain... • Grade 30 -3/16" to 1/2" Witi riryi of thimble, fM/«, ctblt clompt, ote.
