(Vicky Bremner photo) W. Wawanosh council authorizes agreement Future safety concerns were a topic for discussion at the April 18 session of West Wawanosh coun­ cil. Lucknow and District Fire Department Chief Peter Steer and Deputy Fire Chief Gary Austin spoke with council about various new pumper trucks, holding capaci­ ties and costs as well as the condi­ tion and life expectancy of the current pumper. Council agreed it would be pre­ mature to review the manure bylaw at the present time as Ashfield Twp.’s bylaw is currently being challenged in the courts. When the law suit is resolved, the transition board will deal with the bylaw, council recommended. Road Superintendent George Humphries was authorized to ten­ der for a new lawn mower in con­ junction with Ashfield Twp. Council authorized an agreement with the North Huron Special Tran­ sit Corporation (Wheels Away) for a per capita grant of 30 cents plus $3 for each ride taken by an eligi­ ble township resident. The agree­ ment took effect April 1 and will be automatically renewed for an addi­ tional 12 months after the first year unless written notice is given. Council endorsed a resolution from Chatham-Kent asking the provincial government to retain the present municipal outlet drainage grant program as well as the tile loan program without any reduc­ tions. Copies of the endorsement will be sent to the MPP, Canadian Federation of Agriculture and Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Council concurred with a resolu­ tion from Welland petitioning the provincial government to amend assessment legislation to include cultural clubs and non-profit halls in the assessment classification for non-profit service organizations and non-profit private clubs for the purpose of exempting them from paying commercial tax rates. General accounts in the amount of $4,734.41 were approved for payment.
