Madill Secondary School Drama Guild will be presenting Fame next week. Students have been working on the production since October. However, it has just been during the last month, since the conclusion of the Sears Drama Festival that the guild has been able to devote all their time to rehearsing Fame. Drama Guild Director Louanna Alexander said with Madill's big gym being closed up, the production will be performed on the stage of Gym 228. She indicated the stage will have to be extended, which will take away some of the already limited space for the audience. However, some members of the audience will be able to sit in the mezzanine. Alexander said there are two student choreographers, Erin Eadie and Rachel McQuail, who are helping direct the production. Alexander is the director. The guest choreographer is Laurel Brown, a friend drama colleague of Alexander. Wendy Brewster is the production assistant. The play opens with the students of the New York High School of Performing Arts auditioning. Alexander indicated the students are desperate to get accepted. The production tracks the students through to graduation. The main players in Fame are Melina Hussey as Carmen Diaz, who believes she is going to be a star. Nick, portrayed by Jay Sanders, is a very intense drama student. Angela Chippa plays Serena, who just wants Nick to notice her, and Tyrone, portrayed by Arras Hopkins, is a cheeky street kid, a great dancer, but a poor student. The main love interest in the play is between Serena and Nick. Other students in the production are Schlomo, played by Gelan Hopkins, a classical music student; Lambchops, played by Mandy Sellers, a tomboy music student; Mabel, a self-conscious dancer played by Ashley Gropp; Iris, a classically trained dancer admitted after the deadline played by Heather Sande; and Joe, the class clown, portrayed by Justin Ruttan. The four main teachers in the production are English teacher Ms Sherman, played by Jackie Falconer; dance teacher Miss Bell, played by Heather Lane; Mr. Myers, portrayed Snow and Mark energetic, hard- of students,” said by John Fleming and music teacher Mr. Sheinkopf, played by Tyson deBoer. Alexander said the pit band is conducted by Joshua Gropp. Members of the pit band are Kim Schedler, Matt Chippa. “This is an working bunch Alexander. “There are some very exciting, singing, music and dance numbers. Fame will be performed May 10, 11, 12 and 13, with a 7 p.m. curtain. With limited seating capacity, Alexander anticipates sold out shows. On May 10, a performance is put on in the afternoon at Madill for Grade 7 and 8 students. People are encouraged to get their tickets early.
