ALICE LOUISE McARTER
Alice Louise McArter passed
away at the Groves Memorial
Community Hospital, Fergus on
Monday, April 24, 2000. She was
84.
Alice was the dear wife of the late
Vic Rogers and the late John
McArter (l 992). She was the loved
mother of Patricia Howes of Kitimat,
BC, Charles Packer of Guelph, step
mother of Dawn Pagnan and James
Rogers, both of Guelph, Mel and
Gerald McArter, Donna Fischer and
Dorothea Ducharme, all of Brussels.
She will always be remembered by
her 18 grandchildren and 29 great
grandchildren.

Chapel - McIntyre & Wilkie Funeral
Home, One Delhi St., Guelph.
Service was held at the Gilchrist
Chapel on Thursday, April 27 at l :30
p.m. with The Rev. David Howells
officiating.
Interment was in Eden Mills
Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the
Alzheimer Society of Guelph-
Wellington or the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Ontario would be
appreciated.
A reception was held in the
Trillium Room of the funeral home.
LOIS (ROBINSON) TASSIE
Lois I. Tassie passed away peace
fully on her 87th birthday March 25,
2000 in the West Coast General
Hospital, Port Albemi, B.C. after a
brief illness.
Mrs. Tassie was bom in Blyth and
has lived in Port Alberni since her
marriage to Clarke Tassie in 1945.
She was predeceased by her parents

Harvey and Ann Robinson as well as
brothers Lyall and Stuart and sisters
Ethel Augustine and Dorothy
Wilkinson.
She leaves to mourn her loss her
husband Clarke, daughters Diane
and Mike Kalin of Vancouver, B.C.
and Arlene and Bob Cearns of
Parksville, BC, her grandchildren
Nadine and Charlene Kalin and
Katrine Cearns, sister Eileen
Robinson of Toronto and nieces and
nephews.
Lois taught school in Crowland
Twp. (Welland, ON). In 1940 she
enrolled in the Women’s Volunteer
Corp, then served in the Canadian
Women’s Army Corp for four years
with the rank of Captain.
In civilian life she was a social
columnist for the West Coast
Advocate in Port Albemi for a year,
then began a 20-year career in the
post office.
Mrs. Tassie was a life member of
the Canadian Legion Branch 169 and
just last year was the first woman to
be a member of the Local Elks Club.
In 1998 Lois was also made a life
member in the British Columbia
Dragoons, where her husband had
served during World War II.
Since she retired Mrs. Tassie has
kept just as busy by dedicating
countless volunteer hours to the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169
and to the Sunshine Club at the Echo
Centre. She was director of the lim
ber up exercise class there and was
asked at 86 years of age to go around
the area schools to show the students
that exercises can be done at any age.
As well she was a life member and
Past District Deputy of the Order of
the Royal Purple #25.
A celebration of Mrs. Tassie’s life
was held at the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch #169 April 8.
RUBY (SMITH) RICH
Ruby (Smith) Rich a resident of
Blyth and formerly of Thamesville,
passed away at Seaforth Manor on
Monday, May 1, 2000 at the age of
88.
Bom in Creelman, Saskat-chewan,
she was a daughter of the late Joseph
and Amanda (Kelly) Smith. She was
the beloved wife of the late Garnet
Rich.
She was the loving mother of
Phyllis and Frank Szusz of RR1,
Blyth and grandmother of 10 grand
children, 19 great-grandchildren,
and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was the dear sister of Myrtle
Rich of Ridgetown and Barney
Smith of Chatham.
Mrs. Rich was predeceased by a
daughter Marion Yvonne Howes,
brothers Ralph and Garnet Smith and
sisters Minnie Smith, Dora Griep,
Samanthia Beakstead and Olive
McDonald.

at Doon village
The Friends of Doon Heritage
Crossroads invite everyone to help
welcome spring with a day that is
dedicated to kites!
During the afternoon of Sunday,
May 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. the Wind
Climbers will demonstrate flying a
number of different kites. For $2
each, children will be able to make
a garbage bag kite or sled kite, no
fail design that flies every time.
Demonstrations will be weather
permitting.

quilts
In celebration of the Waterloo
County and Area Quilt Festival,
Doon Heritage Crossroads, in co
operation with the Waterloo County
Teachers, will once again hang a
quilt show displaying both tradition
al and contemporary designed quilts
from Thursday, May 18 until
Thursday, May 25, 2000.
Teachers from across the Region
have submitted their entries and their
quilts and wall hangings will be put
on display. Doon will also display
some of its finer quilts from the col
lection, on beds in the homes
throughout the historic village.
